2001 zx12 tech question

I am getting ready to do some more mods to my bike but need to fix a gremlin that we found on the dyno early this year. at 60% throttle opening the voltage at the TPS drops 5-8 points. We tried changing Pwrcmdr's, TPS's, both were off of a nice bike in his shop and in good working order (just dynoed the previous day). I also wanted to point out that I changed grips a long time ago ,and when I did the right one, while I was working the grip into the throttle off direction with a little air pressure the thing whent "click". I never thought about it until when I started running the shit out of the bike if you go full throttle for a about 10seconds and let out, I loose all my slack or play in the throttle(bike does not rev up and idles normal). Cut the bike off and twist it WFO again and you can feel stop at WO and then twist it a little more WO and it moves about 1/4 inch and play is back. I am thinking that I may need a new throttle or computer. Yea Rog is stumped to. We wanted to try the computer off of the "parts bike" but it was a 2000, wont work on a 2001. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Brett

Thanks Gunner, We allready tried the TPS and "new" PWRCMDR out of the box and no change. I think it is the throttle thing. Chris at Performance Psycle thinks it is in the computer. Rog is just at a loss. He thinks it is not the ECU. The only thing that sucks is it only shows up on the dyno. Hey there Jim, Everything well I hope? Have you talked to Rog. He is going through a tough time right now. His mom became suddenly ill about a month to six weeks ago and passed last week. May she rip, what a wonderful lady. He went up to be with family, not sure when he will be back. Karen and I are thinking he will move back. His dad and mom were together 58 years! So sad. But that is where he belongs right now, up there with family. WTF, Trade my 12???????????? fuck that! I know your bike is the most neutral bike I have ever been on in corners but I could not get used to staring at the headlight and front fender while I was riding. I just cant see me riding that for 3-500 miles in a day. I am getting ready for new exhaust and new paint on wheels, Penske shock. Then I am going to let Greg the guy who roadraces the TIMS bike that Bill's company sponsers set my suspention up. Yes I will raise the forks in the clamp about 5mm. Greg said the same thing but I aint raising the ass any more (allready on the balls of my feet). As far as a new 14 goes. NOT!!! I have ridden with Dave and he cant even come close in the twisties. Did a roll-on with another and lets say again NOT! I am just not convinced that they handle as good as A well set up 12. They will ride a hell of a wheelie though. Easy! Give me a call, Kelly and the kids doing well I hope. Make sure you tell her I called them kids!

Dude that sucks about Rog, I will call him.....

Keep the 12 and buy a liter bike or a biddle weight and do trackdays....ask Chris, he is hooked.....
Will tell helly what you called them....lmfao

I am going pick up a Penske or Elka for the 10 when I get back, and have the forks gone through...righ tnow I need rearsets as I am grinding off my toe sliders and pegs on the track as of late....need more clearance to go faster....cause I am too fat and old to be able to get off the seat anymore...lmfao

Yea, I know. I just cant manage another bike right now financially. I am looking into the middle weights though. Never thought I would consider a suzuki. The old zx7's are really affordable, just out dated. I hope I can talk Gunner into letting me use his 2001 computer while I am in Knoxville getting my 12 remapped. Then I will know if thats it. Map it with it and get another good one when I get back.....

Talked to Rog last night....Everything is going as well as to be expected. He did say that there is no way he will move back up for good. He is going through what I went through...he cant wait to get out of there right now.

The voltage out of the TPS is a product of the voltage into the TPS and the TPS ground. Have you checked the voltage into the TPS at 60% throttle?

The TPS is a simple potentiometer with 5 volts on one side and Ground on the other. The moving part is a wiper that moves between the two extremes. At midpoint halfway between 5v and Gnd it will output 2.5V, half of 5V.

However if the input voltage drops to say 4.5V the 50% becomes 2.25V. If the problem is a bad 5v input then swapping the TPS will not fix it.

If you find the TPS 5V in is dipping then check the 5V on one of the Air Pressure sensors. If the TPS 5v is bad but the pressure sensor 5V in is not then its probably a bad TPS wire/connector. If they are both bad then the 5V sensor output from the ECU is suspect.

When you say 60% throttle does that mean in all gears, i.e. different rpms, or is it always about the same rpm? And when you say down 5-8 points do you mean .05-.08 or .5 - .8 ?

Yes , it is the voltage into the TPS. They checked it at two points, where the signal comes out of computer and in the TPS. When I say 60% I am going buy the throttle opening position on the dyno software. They were using a volt meter to check the TPS and you are correct if I remember it was .05-.08 on the meter but on the dyno screen it was showing the throttle position drop, (we had the manual during this). Thanks for the tip. I will get Chris or Rog to check those sensors. I was just thinking that If I could get a "good" computer to swap then that might be easier for me to do then find those pressure sensors. Dont know when Rog will be able to do tinker with it. Thanks again, we will check that out!

Jim, easier then swapping a computer! Lets see a couple hundred bucks or 8,000 bucks. The only way this bike is leaving me is if I do what you did to yours....LOL Then maybe I might get a B model.

Gunner, you got PM back. Thanks man, that will be a BIG help. Rog and Chris think that is it.
I will have it mapped with yours and put mine back in and find one when I get back.

Yea I see it now. Buy a 10, start doing track days, then bankrupcy, then divorce, then... have to sell 12 and 10 along with everything else to pay bills and wife.....

Yea I have been thinking of painting mine again this winter, black pearl or candy thunder blue. Blue, If I could find a complete set of 01 canadian graphics for the blue. No luck though.

Thats why I like to keep a bike. I get tired of it.......change it, complete cosmetic redo! You know like "OVERHAULIN" only smaller and longer! LOL Just finding a good reason to tell Karen is the challenge! You should have seen her when I bought the exhaust from UK.
