My friends ZX9 feels pretty similar as far as bar reach and location. Pegs maybe a tad higher. I could definitely feel a weight difference. I've had the same thought lately myself. Have Muzzy punch it to 1000cc and hang on!

Fish the better of the two is the R1. But if you want to have great power too get the Gixxer. The Gixxer is the best all around package. The only problem I have with mine is the brakes(they are the same as the 12). I have never had this much fun on a bike before and that includes my 99 ZX9.

R1 by far dude, much lighter and will hold a line better than a gixxer 1k. If it's the power you want, get the gixxer 1k. The new R1 is much more nimble and light than it used to be...

I was thinking of an new 01 ZX9 or a new 01 R1... dunno if I wanna deal with version 1.0 of fuel injection again... as for the power I am willing to trade it for handling... prob with the Suzuki is that it's F.I as well.. although methinks that they used 2 sets of butterfly valves to smooth it out vs Kawi's non-attempt to do anything at all to make it smooth...

correct me if I am wong, but the 01 R1 is still carb'd, no? must be some good deals on that machine right now...

as fer weight... a hardly-ableson would feel lighter than the 12 at this point

Fish - Considering your riding ability, perhaps a Honda Silverwing would be the best thing for you?

Fish I personally would go for the 1000 GSXR next.... Great power and good handling.... Just my 2 cents worth.... I think the R-1's are Busa ugly also.... The 954 have been dynoing about 133-135 ponys I hang at a 954 site also.... Big 1K GSXR horsepower and decent handling would be my next go...

My Thoughts

I must admit the Silver R-1 is a great bike. I saw it at the show in Chicago and if it was just alittle larger I would have probally bought it over the 2002 12.

My friend has a 01 ZX9. Just put a pipe and jet kit in and it pulls real nice. For me comfort is key so the ZX9 would have to be my choice after the 12. Would still need heli's and a corbin for this old bod though! R1, 954, GSXR = OUCH on my back (have ridden them all).

Am I missing something? Buying a 9 because it handles better then a 12. You're kidding, right! Yes a R1, GSR1K, even a 954, but a ZX9, I don't think so. If you're looking for less weight, comfort, yes it may be a LITTLE more comfortable, but handle better, NOT!

Hey Guys, back visiting the old 12r hangout.
I have 3000k's on my new 02 G1k and I love it.
I dont miss my 12r even 1 bit!
Fish forget the zx9, might as well keep the 12r.
I ride with a 02-R1 and my G1K eats it. The difference in handling between the 2 bikes is all rider.
Coming down from a 12r there is only 2 bikes to look at
the G1K and the R1, problem is the R1 leaves you asking for a bit more power. Its close, falls just a bit short.
You get off the gixxer and just shake your head and say " I should of done this awhile ago".
The fun factor is awesome on the gixxer. Being able to pull it up in 3rd at 160km/h is mind blowing.
The difference in handling between the liter bikes and the 12r is really noticeable and I would consider myself an average rider. But corners have never been so much fun.
Now top speed the 12r is still the king, but the G1k will show you 305km/h(yes indicated) if you crank it. Problem is the wind protection is minimal and by the time 250km/h blows by you begin to subconciously slow down.
Bottomline is the G1k is the only liter bike out there that allows you to step off the 12r and still be happy with the power and be blown away by every other aspect.
Just my opinion guys, BTW I still use my Kawi keychain.
Good luck
SK

Hmmmm....

No 12R? Sorry Fish, I'll have to BAN YOU from the forum!

GSXR 1000? Yes.
R1? Pretty good choice.
9R? Your kidding, right?

You could alway get another Ducati. My, I just found out how PROUD ducati is of their parts. My buddy's 916 kickstand snapped while he was working on it in my garage. I was able to "salvage" his turn signal lens and reattach his mirror.

The kickstand? $90! That JUST for the "leg" part. Had he need the part that the leg attaches to, it would have been another $120! For the sake of both of our hearts, he did not ask what a lower fairing would cost. I'm sure I would have keeled over.

While he was putting on his Double Bubble, he dropped (and lost) one of those nuts in the little rubber grommet. Only sold as a "set" wit the torx screw. $9 EACH! GAK!

Since my 12 got hit in the parking lot (just got the estimate back, $2043!!!) I've made plans to acquire needed parts and sell it cause I beleive it is indeed jinxed. Since I'm getting married next year I won't be able to afford another of any brand for a few years.
My choice for a next bike will be a Ducati R model though. I'll probably end up finding a used 998 R somewhere and "acquire" some Bostrom decals and go to work. There's a few ponies to be found in there (not too many without sacrificing reliability).
I'd seriously consider the gixxer 1k Fish. Some good power to be found in there, the '02 looks pretty sexy in red

My hesitation with the Gsxr1000 is just that.. .hesitation.... it is fuel injected.... I dont think I want another fuel injected motorcyckle.. not for a while.. .til they figure it out... I will have to seriously look at all of the options.. if I cant get the 12's f.i. sorted out this season then it's off to the crusher with it... I've enjoyed the bike tremendously, however it is pretty much a land yacht... I'm not to sure what to do with it... since I'm left Aprillia-less up here (no Aprillias avail in Canada) .. I cant get what truly want, which is the RSV Mille... so it'll be another piece of jap-scrap as an interim filler bike to wati for the govt officials to rubber stamp a nice lite italian bike for me to own.. that should be another year er two...

The pipe may solve the probs with the 12... who knows... but I wonder if it's a losing propostion... waiting for the zx10 seems to be a waste of time...

By all means trade for a 600. With all the money you will get back, Fish, think of all the tampons you can buy.

LMFAO

"Fish, think of all the tampons you can buy."

That was great.

As far as the fuel injection problems go. My 12 runs great and I just put an Akro on with a set of K&N's and I think it runs even better. It feels a lot quicker than it used to.

The new '02 R1 fuel injection is much like a carbed bike. All the foreign bike mags (the good ones ) say that it rides like it's carbed and feels much more refined and sorted than the previous model. It may not have as much power as the 1k but they designed the bike before the 1k even came out. The R1 is much more sorted in the corners with a lighter feeling. A friend of mine has an '02 so this isn't just heresay, he got rid of the gixxer for the R1

Gawd I dont know about you Fish. WHy use a refrigerator?? Its got so many complex parts... Why not use an ice chest?? Its simple to operate....lol. Fuel injection is the future...now!
I dont know what qualities you like in a motorcycle, but dumping the 12 because its ill handling? You're a big guy right?? I dont think the GSXR can be ridden all day. The 9 is nice but seriously down on hp compared to the Zuk. The R1 is nice looking in silver, but very small too!
Honda...oh I forgot...lol
I dont know its a tough call on what to *settle* for. Im sure you can hunt through the classifieds and find some of these for a *test ride*...hehe.
The ZX9 does have a big bore kit available. The Zuk parts interchange with the whole GSXR model line. The R1 well...it looks nice.

Interested in what you will decide on.
