September Cycle World and the ZX14 After reading the Article, I see where it is possible that part of my Dissapointment in the 14 may be the Kawasaki Ball cutting done to the Bike. I need to check with the Dyno Operator and find out if he did the Pulls in 4th or 5th Gear Seems like there may be some "Carry over" from the merging of Kawasaki and Suzuki. I did not know that the 14 was ECU Controlled in torque and HP through 4th Gear. And it is not until you reach 5th gear that you "MAY" see the full power of the 14 because we all know that in 6th it is limited again!
Amazing! You can buy a Motorcycle where you are TRUSTED to be in total control of the Power only in 1 gear. SO I still have to ask myself does this new (to me) information make me more or less impressed than I already was? I do know 1 thing for sure, it makes me even more impressed with my 2000 ZX12R which we still do not know even if it is up to full potential as delivered in 2000

Yes but Vince the boys have learned that Kawaski has done 99% of the BALL cutting with the secondaries, and that's very easy to overcome. 1/2 hour and a #2 phillips and the balls are back! At least they made it easy to fix. Even though it's ECU controlled and cracking the ECU is next to impossible they made the device that the ECU is controlling very easy to defeat. They could have silver brazed the blades in place and really fucked up our world. Still defeatable but NOT to 85% of the guys that buy one. It's an impressive package still.
My only gripe is the integrated cylinder! WHY? WHY? WHY?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, but my 2k zx12r 1361 makes 212 rwhp, so why should I be impressed w/the 14? Big K could have produced a 210+ hp bike; they just didn't. That, plus the polock looks is why I'm not impressed.

I read the extensive article Brock wrote but I never knew the problem extended into 4th Gear!!

Vincent - if you have a chance, maybe someone can hook you up with a run on a 14 at Maxton. ____________

I wouldn't kick a 14 out of bed for eating crackers. ____________

Actually I do not want a 14! I also do not want the 04 & 05 12 with the 2 sets of Throttle Plates. The only 12 that moves my Blood is the 00's. SInce I always wanted a ZRX, I got one of them and use it for my "Pleasure" Riding!

I disagree.. The ball cutting with the 14 as I think also with the 12r is in the compression, rev limit, ecu and camshaft... these are the major factors limiting the bikes..The zx10r with available factory race cam and ecu is pound for pound a far superior motor.. So yes Vince I like you are less than impressed wit the bike.. Especially considering a 12r with brock sidewinder, mr9, and ignition made a 189.5 horsepower with no cam timing changes.. A thin head gasket and cam timing and your up to 185 plus.
imho the throttle plates are only a small piece of the " balls being cut out of it" With 12.8 to 1 compression, 47mm throttle bodies, a red line of 11500, and .381 lift intake cam with STOCK PIPES should yield around 185 horsepower off the show rooom floor..

I dont think its a matter of them intentionally reducing the power on the bike. I think they tuned the whole setup for more midrange power than the 12r. Its like crossing a busa engine with a 12r engine. A different goal.
One reason the 10r engine apears to be tuned in a "higher state" is because it has less parasitic losses because its components are lighter weight. Like putting carbon wheels on a bike. The engine makes the same hp but the dyno reads higher. So It will show more hp on a dyno for the same BSFC. And a 600 engine will show more hp than a zx10r engine on a dyno with the same BSFC. The extracted hp per pound of fuel can be the same but the dyno will read higher.
Look at a 4 stroke model airplane engine. If you scaled up the cc to power ratio it would be like a 600 cc bike engine making 250 hp. But it just doesnt work that way.
Cylinder filling is also easier on a smaller cylinder than a bigger one. It happens faster so it can be revved higher. Physics dont change and arnt always scaleable. The mass of a cc of air doesnt change but the number of cc's in the port does. You can start the air moving quicker in a smaller port. Theres many other factors involved with this topic that can fill a few books.
If you ever used dynomation http://www.proracingsim.com/dynomationmainpage.htm software to develop an engine it would make your head spin at first with varriables.
So the bottom line is its hard compare the state of tune of two different size engines without taking into account rotating mass, BSFC, friction, etc, etc.

I like the 14 just the way Kawasaki set it up....
When I jumped on it to make the 4 DragStrip passes all I did was drive in the parking lot to feel the gear shifter then over to the burnout box!!!...I did the burnout, staged then launched the 14 and I rode it as I do my 12...After I looked at the timeslip which was a 9.76 @ 144, first thing I said was it felt just like the 12 but more comfortable when leaning over the tank...I have to say I was right at home on that 14, felt like the 12 but with a different motor...You know what thinking about it now it pulled like a ZX10 on top end but was more stable for those of you that have raced the 10...
I need time to get use to being able to just wack the throttle open and go on the 14, as we all know you cant do that on the 12!!!...Thats why no Kawasaki guys go fast on the 14 right now, because this is the first Kawasaki made that you can jam the throttle open without smoking the tire or flipping the bike over!!!
