Mixed Emotions of History that was made yesterday
I am very Happy that JR Todd became the First Black to win an NHRA Top fuel class event. the part I have Mixed emotions about is the fact that it made no news. The Good news is that NHRA Is not an Organization like NASCAR that only had one very badly treated Racer named Wendall Scott. The Bad news is that anyone making history should receive recognition for being first at something.
The cool personality of JR is almost like watching James "Bubba" Stewart! His head sure took a beating when the parachute failed to deploy and he went in to the sand trap!
In Funny Car, I remember Malcom Durham that had a shop at Peace Cross in Bladensburg Maryland just outside of Washington DC in the lat 60's and early 70's He won a few races and his nick name was "Burnout"!
On another note I could care less about Ms. Enders and her Puggy Cheeks who left the team that gave her a start for what she thought were Bigger and Better things! Noce to see the old team do a lot better than her

I was present at a NHRA Top Fuel event at Las Vegas (The Strip) Motor Speedway when Doug Kalitta broke the record @ it think it was 326 MPH or 324 cant remember off the top of my head it was about 3 years ago,,anyhow i dont recall a whole lot of coverage for that feat either,, i watched the race you are talking about and for him to go against the Sarge after putting the rail in the sand and then have a run like he did,,gotta give the kid props especially at the age of what is it like 24 years old..good work!!

I guess it's all perspective Vince.
You see a black man winning an NHRA race.
I see a man winning an NHRA race.
As long as we as a race (the human race) keep categorizing people by color/race/religion/ethnicity prejudice won't end.
What this reminds me of is an old guy I know that I watch a football game with once a year. He's a good old boy, about 10 years older than you.
Every single year during the game he'll say at least once "Man, those darkies sure can run!".
It drives me nuts, but he's old and settled in his ways and not going to change. I'm sure he doesn't think of it as racist or prejudiced.
Sure seem's that way to me though.

What Blitz said...It seems to me that every racer in the NHRA show is treated equal !!!
But it also seems that the woman do get more publicity than the men!!!

Ditto......
I agree, but my parents raised me right, I agree with the above statement...., it gets so deep under my skin when people make racist comments.........
Dont get me wrong, I see where VH is coming from, but if everyone saw things like most of us do, it would not be an issue...........

yeh. i think blitz hit it on the head. (i'm agreeing with blitzkrieg, a first i think!)
to me a dude did such & so, and nobody knows what colour his skin is under the leathers.
And when the colour is revealed why should it be made a big deal?
There is no reason to treat someone differently because of their skin colour. NONE.
People are people first, second and last. Their wrapper means nothing. UNLESS they make it mean everything to them.

I was there! Spent the day Sunday at Bandimere in the boiling 103 degree sun. Track temp was 146 !! It was nasty hot. Took TONS of pics and mpegs.
Not sure about "not making news", it was on every website I visit, from MSN.com to ESPN.com
The coolest thing about his victory was that it was in part due to his competitors assistance.
After JR drove his car to the beach, he was interviewed over the loudspeaker and on track "Jumbo-tron", he said it would take a huge effort from his team and even then, he wasn't sure if they would be able to get the car ready for the finals, so he gave an open invitation to any other teams who would be willing to help.....
Renae and I took a stroll through the pits after the sand run and in a great display of sportsmanship, there were representatives(mechanics) from about 5 other teams helping to rebuild his car.

I agree with Blitz...I see a young guy,a little guy winning so to speak...the problem sometimes is that we here "Americans"don't realize how much alike we are until we are in times of crisis...i.e: 9/11 or we are in a foreign country where they don't see as as white or black they see us as Americans, free ones at that who can bitch about whatever we want!

Blitz, Maybe when all Forms of Sports become Like Base Ball, foot Ball and Basket Ball where one time there were No Blacks to now where only the Best "PERSON" plays I guess THEN I will not see anything but a Cool Young Kid out doing his thing. But the fact is that what your Dad and Mom did is most likely what you will do it takes a long time for change at the top. John Force has daughters, but you see that one of them will be in top fuel or funny car next year.
Last, JR did the one thing we all know that is hard to do no matter who you are! "He made his dad PROUD!"

I was out there too and it was HOT!!!!!!!!!
USA Today did have coverage of J.R. , the article talked about him being the first African American to win a Top Fuel meet.
I listened to him talk in the pits.......he sounded just like a regular 'ole american to me.
He done good.

I for one do appreciate special accomplishments by African Americans.
I was watching one of the Williams sisters winning yet again another match, and i thought to myself:
NICE TITS!

It's all cool Vince.
Just remember when I talk about some of my best friends, I don't say "My closest BLACK friend Malcolm. I say "My buddy Mal".
I'm pretty sure he doesn't refer to me as his "Closest WHITE friend" either.

Vincent,
We cancelled our trip to the Canadian Rockies when Dad went in the hospital. Once he got out, my brother and sister took some time off to stay with him so me and the Mrs. loaded up the KLR 650 and went back out to Colorado for a couple of weeks of mountain riding.

Brian, Maybe it was my Up Bringing!! My Neighborhood was moslty white with a Few Mexicans (They were from Mexico) I was a Freshman in High School before I knew the differences It was a very upsetting day when I found out what the differences were all about! But looking back on it maybe my parents did good for me to go that far and not really understand it!
At my Wedding, there was real confusion when the ushers tried to put the Black people on my side and the White on Peggy's side and then watched every body switching sides Of course I got everyone in the end when I served Rye-Pumpernickel bread swirled together
So in my life I see everything from Both SIdes but so not want anything over looked! I would not change anything! And I am a Conservative Democrat also (What Republicans used to stand for) Oh Oh, Otis is sure to get me now!!
Thanks Karl I will get back to you today!
