unbalanced wheels

anyone know if a bike is reasonably ridable with the balancing weights taken off the wheels? i don't mean canyon carving, just a highway drone for a hundred miles, at like 50mph. obviously it will depend on the size of the weights. think a farily standard setup.

thx in advance

just like a car you might get a vibration.

Bike wheels are not nearly as prone to vibration as car wheels. I have run a rear tire that I mounted and never even bothered to balance....and you could barely tell......even up in the really big numbers.

The front tire has the potential to be more dangerous when out-of-balance than the rear, but has less rotating mass, so even that probably won't shake or shimmy at the speeds you are talking about.

thx CM. i took the plunge, so hope youre experience holds up in my case. i can always put one of the weights back on if it turns out to be intolerable to the dealer.

Remove the calipers and the spacers and slide the axle out until the seals do not touch the axle and spin the wheel gently and mark the bottom where it stops. push the wheel forward and see if it stops at the same place. Push it backward and see if the same thing happens. then using Tape a weight pit on an ounce 180 Degrees opposite that and see if the wheel can find the same place to stop. Add or subtract weight until you can push or pull the wheel from 4 different places 4 times and it never stop in the same place. It will be balanced (How we did in the Old days. the only thing hurting this is the bearing seals!

can't say i noticed any significant vibrations on the whole trip (up to 100mph), so i guess it weren't unbalanced much. i may just try that method vince, thx.
