Help us solve the problem of dealers selling stuff here..
Here's the problem.. this site costs money to run. Currently Muzzy, SpencerCycle and Burnaby Kawi support this site. They foot the bill so that everyone can post.
They barely cover the costs of running this site.
Now other dealers seem to want to post to sell their wares here, but they dont want to buy any ad space. How do we solve this problem? It simply isnt fair that our sponsors pay for the site, and then other people advertise on it for free... not to mention that we desperately need more sponsorship money to keep this site running....
here is an idea...
how about a "pay per post" dealers forum? Say $5 a post for it to stay up for 15 days, $10 for 1 month etc etc? Then dealers wanting to post their services could do so without riding on the others coat-tails... it would also make it easier to moderate...
any other ideas.. comments.. suggestions?
We need to solve this asap.

As long as everyone knows to buy stuff only from the sponsors, I wouldn't buy anything from anyone except Doug anyhow, then it shouldn't matter. Either tell everyone to completely ignore their posts or once you see a post by one of them, delete it then ban them.
My humble 2 cents.

I for one think that your idea sounds good! I know that the people that advertise here support this group and will order what I can from them! Not because they are close or even becuase they have the best price but because they help keep this site up, which has helped me out more than I can say!

Go Muzzy. Have I purchased anything from some one else other than from a local dealer? I think not. If they are not willing to pay a little for the up keep of the site plz tell them nicely to fuck off. Just my $.02 worth and thats an overpayment.

I don't consider the regulation of advertising as some sort of evil censorship. You should pay to play. On the other hand, I would hate to miss out on a product or service that I need because a company didn't get to mention their name on this site. But I think that fear of missing out on something is more than countered by the shear volume of knowlege that this board homogenizes. If there is something motorcycle related out there, someone would know of it. So, I say end the free rides in whatever manner is easiest and if you're willing to put in the time to have an advertising section, great. (Disclaimer: I could be wrong about all this).

I'm not a dealer but started selling Yellow Boxes as a group buy thing. Made enough to pay for 1/2 of Bear's stacks. Ordered another 10 to pay off Bear's stacks. Even I could afford $5.00/15 days, $10.00/30 days or say, $15.00 for 2 months.

I am not into the marketing on web pages but how about a sales banner page where if a vendor wants to post in the classifieds, they have to pay and supply an HTML snippet that goes on the sales page, then post a summary sales pitch in the forum with a link to the vendors sales page? If they like the exposure on that page, maybe they would be interested in becoming a full-time sponsor?
Basically no phone number or major details in the forum, but the link should go to a sales frame that has the details. This sounds like alot of work though, probably just easier to charge to post in the forum.
Is there a way to charge the vendor per order if they generate any sales from the link they place in the classifieds? You could ask everyone that ordered from them to post as a reply to the vendor's original solicitation. If they do not honor the sales numbers, ban them from the forum.
These ideas probably suck. This is why I do not have my own business (e-business anyway). I could certainly run my own consulting company, it is the internet marketing models that blow my mind, they keep changing and the profit margins fluctuate wildly with any idea.

Let me get this right,
Fish,
with your proposed solution it would be cheaper for us to DROP the banner ad we now have monthly and just pay for products to be listed.
NOT a good solution for this site.
We advertise on MANY sites and one in particular allows 1 free product release per month and the rest are charged $50.00 per product to be listed as a release. That in itself STOPS all the dime dealers from flooding that site. Now i do not like that BUT it is THE MAJOR site and biggest site of that demographic in that part of the industry that we aim some of our products at. What I am trying to say is although ITIS VERY EXSPENSIVE to advertise at that site we do it BECAUSE we know the returns are greater than what we are spending to advertise. If companys want to sell thier products and make money from YOUR hard work and YOUR vison to have a site for people to gather,PUT your foot down and make them advertise. The seriuos ones WILL and the fly by night ones WILL NOT. It is really THAT simple.
If you DO NOT get a grip on this soon it will get out of control to the point where you WILL NOT be able to stop it,you will spend your time surfing the topics looking for violaters.
My suggestion is delete any topic that a non advertising company willfully puts up and VIOLATES a policy that should be listed above and in each forum that states no solicitation from non advertising companys on your site to promote or sell the parts and offer them the chance to advertise if they do not accept so be it if they do GREAT. If the company ( AND I MEAN COMPANY OR PERSON) continues to violate the policy then BANN THEM!!!!!!!!!
Now this MAY inflame some people on this site (what i just said) BUT it would be no different than my company running off your electricity and not paying our part of the bill for that month. YOU would NOT like it.

Let's just say...
That I use a product or service and am ecstatic with it and I just have to tell everybody. Or somebody posts a question asking for recommendations for a type of product or service. Is that advertising? I would say it is a form of "word of mouth" advertising. Should that be censored too?
Just curious.

Most certainly not Rocket, I've bought everything I have on my 12 because of just what you described. Friends talking about a great product is different than companies specifically getting on here to try to sell their stuff.
Excellent points Doug.

that's not what I am suggesting Doug... I am suggesting a dealer forum where a dealer could POST a thread... NOT a banner ad.. that thread would have a time limit and expire... they would not have their ads seen across the entire site...
I am simply trying to think of a solution so that I can stop the complaining before it begins as I begin to delete dealer's posts who havent chipped in... I need somewhere to move the posts and and option t offer them...
I am all ears if you have another idea...
I see it being completely separate from banner advertising.. more like taking out a classified ad in the paper vs taking out a proper back page ad..

If someone is trying to make a profit using a medium you pay for and you maintain out of your own pocket...then there is no reason they should not help support you in some way.
Thats kinda like someone borrowing your car without your permission and not even filling it up with gas when they return it.
They obviously dont care about your feelings or policies as they didnt contact you prior to attempting to obtain free advertising...so why should you care about theirs?
Its not like you are attempting to feed your family on the earnings of a website, however they are trying to make money off your creation....for free. that is not right.
