I'm sure you checked the cams carefully, but you need to put them in v-blocks and check for runout. They can only live with about .002 to .005 runout along the length before they start to bind up in the bearing saddle.

No. I think I am going to go with some 85mm JE's this time around.
Entropy knows/has an in with everyone!!

Yep. I lucked out. Cams are fine.
Thanks for the heads up on the runout.

Got your email..... Wow, not good. so what did the keeper grooves look like in the valves. also what did the keepers look like? (If you found them yet)
I would say so far it looks like over heated exhaust valves (depends if both exhaust valves show same signs of overheating. But less likely it could be a keeper failure, assuming the springs were still closing the valves and the valves wernt floating. But you will likely see signs of keeper failure on one, but not both, exhaust valves.
Whats the difference in seat and open pressures from muzzy springs and stock?
A seat could have come loose. Thats a tough one to tell because the seats popout quite often when this kind of damage starts to happen.
What "tuning" were you doing at the time? Detonation is all but impossable to hear on these engines when your wearing a helmet and at the end of the 1/4 mile.
Look very closely at the bottom of the damaged piston and compare it to the others. look for temperature trouble. If it was detonation then the others may (should) show some signs of it.
You wernt spraying it at the time of failure, were you?

Y2K,
Keepers looked fine. I did find them all. Haven't checked the keeper groves on the valves yet. It is on my list of things to do. So far I have only been able to get one valve stem out of the head.
As far as spring pressure goes I think the Muzzy ones have almost twice as much seat pressure as the stockers. I did check them when I put them in but that was quite a while ago. I can't really remember for sure.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't detonation. All the other pistons look fine.
No spray. This motor has never been sprayed since I rebuilt it.

Osti, find those valve ends, they will tell you alot. Its sounding more and more like a seat came loose.
Take some pics of the bottom of the pistons if you can. It would be nice to compare all 4 for heat.

I will check those keeper grooves. I will also take some pics of the piston bottoms and post them up.
I plan to split the cases this saturday or sunday. I will post pics then.

That's about the ugliest top end blowup I've ever seen. You sure you got the clutch in right away? Looks like you drove it all the way home...... !
I think, either a valve head came off or a seat fell out.

Dr. Doug, I was hoping you would take a look at this thread.
I got the clutch pulled in as soon as I realized something was wrong. It may not have been right when things started going wrong but I would say pretty quick.
"Looks like you drove it all the way home." LMAO!! That is hilarious! Thanks Doug I needed a good laugh.
My first thought was also a valve seat. Didn't even think about the valve coming apart.
Maybe I'll find out more when I split the cases this weekend.
Thanks for adding your opinion Doug. Also thanks to everyone else who has helped me out with this. The membership here is great!

Jaws,
I split the cases today. The wife unit has the camera and she is in Denver. I will post pics when she gets back. I think she gets home Wednesday.
I don't think it was the keepers and yes they were stock keepers. I agree with Doug. I think a seat came out or a head of a valve let go.

Crank looks good. I was very happy about that. I think I am going to send to our buddy Dave and have him check it out anyways.
Cases also look good.

We're fine out here in Mo City. Downtown Houston was pretty bad yesterday though. Today has been moderate to light. No ridin' til Thursday...

TRNorBRN,
I just re-read this. Yes, I am going for the 86mm JE's. Not the 85's that I stated earlier. DUH!! Sorry about that.
