Yellow Box wiring questions

I am finally getting around to installing my yellow box I bought a few months ago. Decided I wanted to install it under the passenger seat - fairly close to the ECU. Looking over the wiring instructions that came with the yellow box and posts on here and other sites pertaining to the installations others have done, I have a couple of questions.

I see where two or three people have posted that they spliced into the speed sensor signal wire down near the speed sensor itself - the explanation being that by making the splice down near the speed sensor, the speedometer AND the ECU will get the corrected signal coming from the yellow box. I can understand why someone might want to do this on the 2001-2002 models that are speed restricted, but why do this on the non-restricted 2000 model? [Two of the people that said they did their wiring this way have the 2000 model!]

In trying to figure out where I want to splice into the speed sensor signal wire, I got out the factory service manual and started looking at the speed sensor/speedometer wiring. From what I can find, the 2000 models don't even send the speed sensor signal to the ECU - it only goes to the meter assembly! Am I missing something here? [Hey, I could miss something - looking at the wiring diagrams in the service manual and trying to trace the wiring almost makes me cross-eyed!!] I was thinking that if there was some valid reason to make my splice somewhere that would allow the ECU and the speedometer to get the corrected signal from the yellow box then I would make sure and do that. But I can't see where the ECU is "in the picture" at all!

Help, comments, insults or whatever..... please send 'em on over so I can decide how I'm going to do my yellow box wiring Saturday morning. And remember now, I'm ONLY talking about 2000 model 12Rs!

The ECU doesn't care about speed. It cares about gear position, engine speed, air density, etc...Speed only goes to the speedo. That's why I tapped it up near the speedo, so I can easily adjust it.

Long winded reply, pardon my grammar, no Red Elk Here!

I recently installed a Yellow Box on my Y2K 12R. (thanks hondo!)
I studied the wiring schematic a bit before proceeding. As you stated, on the 00 the speed sensor gives a signal to the speedo only.

I wanted the Yellow Box under the rear seat also.

To do it the way I did, you will need an additional 3 ft of each color wire from the yellow box.

Here is how I wired it:

The lead from the speed sensor is where I cut the pickup wire, about 4 inches or so from the sensor. I cut the vinyl sleeve (around its circumferance)that protects the wires where they pass in front of the countershaft sprocket cover.
I then slid 2 pieces of the correct color "spare" wire up the sleeve so it exited at the sensor end of the sleeve. Pull this wire all the way through leaving only enough to solder the splices. Now slip some shrink tubing over each of the 2 new wires and then solder the correct wires together. Slide the shrink tube over the splices, and heat.

Now slide the vinyl tubing back together and tape the vinyl sleeve back together.

Run these 2 new wires under the fuel tank up to the seat storage area. I enclosed the 2 wires in a long piece of shrink tubing to bundle and protect them, and wire tied them to some wiring already routed in that area.

Take a piece of the spare red wire and tap into the tail light power lead under the storage tray.
Take the spare black wire and solder a ring connector on it and then place it under the rear brake res. mounting bolt.
Again I sleeved these wires with shrink tubing.

Run the red and black wire over to meet up with the 2 wires coming from the speed sensor. Where the wires meet up, I slid larger size shrink tubing over them and bundled all 4 wires as 1.

Now I installed a Moldex 4 pin plug to this newly installed 4 wire lead. I obtained the plug assy at the local electronics supply for- FREE!

I drilled a 1/4" hole in the upper left corner of the storage tray to pass the lead supplied with the Yellow Box through. I inserted a rubber grommet into this hole.

Pass the Yellow Box lead through the grommet and install the other half of the moldex plug to the Yellow Box lead.

Join the moldex plugs together, reinstall the package tray.
Plug in the Yellow Box and calibrate.
I put silicon dielectric grease in all of the plug connectors to keep any moisture out.

The reason I went this route is that I wanted to be able to simply remove the Yellow Box and return the bike to near oem appearance, no cut up wiring showing.
Removal of the Yellow Box will only require the removal of the tray, and cutting the Moldex plug from the Yellow Box lead and cutting of the leads from the sensor, and soldering them together. All of the changes are hidden, and look oem.
The additional Moldex plug allows the Yellow box to be mounted in the storage tray, but to be unplugged from the bike when the tray is removed. Without this additional plug, the Yellow Box lead would have been captured in the tray where it passes through the grommet and not been detachable from the bike.

Hope this gives you some ideas, Ozzy.

I tapped in right up on the speedo head. The box sticks right to the front of the speedo, and you only have to remove the windshield to get at it.
