High altitude ECU...and programmable ECU
well its been said by bob and some others too that there are reportedly 2 ECU's...the high altitude and the low altitude ECU's....
how does one differenciate between the 2....for a 05 model....how do i know this and incase i want to change the ECU what part number would be for the 05 high altitude ECU....
also guys look at this porgrammable ECU
megasquirt

There was only one high altitude ECU for the first year ('00). All the others has it standard. And so said the whole name - high altitude ECU - was probably made so that Kawasaki didn't had to change all the ECU unless the owner said that he/she rides at the mountains where the old ECU didn't compensate enough for the differencies in airpressure depending on the altitude. So basically the old ECU had just a design foult that was corrected. And the foult made itself apparent only in the high elevation so the ECU was named High Altitude ECU.

alright....that clears it....
another thing....
on a serious pure performance note....is that megasquirt ECU a complete replacement....
like the 12r ECU controls a lot of stuff and also has links to a lot of them...so will it be possible to install the megasquirt ECU.....

You are correct on the year.
I didn't have to bitch about mine, it was a left-over A1 I bought new in June of '01 and the dealer replaced the ECU with the high-altitude ECU per Kaw TSB.
Hey, we're at 6,250 feet here in Denver and I can be at 14,000 feet in 30 minutes.
The high altitude thing has to work.

I gotta figure something out too. My 600' altitude Indiana bought 12 is a dog at 6000'+.
So are you guys saying that the 00 had an optional high-alt. ECU and the following ECUs are able to internally compensate for altitude?
Or are you saying if you have an 01+, at high-alt. you've got an inferior 12?

bob let me know what you think about the programmable ECU...it looks like a good investment in terms of pure performance....do you know someone who's got a programmable ECU.....

All the ECUs compensate for the altitude but the first patch didn't compensate enough so they had to do a recall. But remember even if the ECU could compensate for the altitude the lack of oxygen will still rob HP's from You. At 10000ft You have less than 70% oxygen left.
