ZRX damage...
Last weekend at Prostar I dropped a valve in the 3rd round. An exhaust valve broke off at the head and punched a hole in the piston. The cylinder just got sent to Superbike Mike to be resleeved, and my new 1mm oversize Ferreas just arrived today. The head will go to George Babor in Clearwater Monday to be fixed up and cut for big valves. While that's being done Kevin & I will probably split the cases and check the bearings. If the stars are aligned and Buddha smiles on me I'll make the next SEMDRA race April 27th. We shall see.

oh man dean damn!!! that sucks, but hope the bearings and all are ok!! good luck on getting everything ready!

Ouch. I know they don't give those valves away. I'll bet your bottom end is fine. Mike's still got my block too. I'm ready for it! Gonna keep using the same springs? How'd the one cam work out for ya?

Thanks for the empathy guys. I decided to look at it as an opportunity to go faster..took me about 1/2 hour 
The valves weren't too too bad, $14 straight from Ferrea. I'm gonna try to check the suspect rod bearings with the cases together, and save myself some hassle, I'm thinking things are OK. Since I can't seem to get George to answer the phone or call me back, it looks like Greg Cope will do the head, and set my spring pressure if needed. I hadn't tried the intake cam yet, and won't until I get a new baseline with the big valves I guess. Think I can break into the 20s on motor? Hee hee. Lofty goals.

Damn!! Count yourself lucky, A dropped valve can easily destroy the whole engine. Good luck with the new ones!! 20's shouldn't be a problem, that Zrex is badass!!!!

Damn Dean! Sorry to hear of the misfortune. Well that gives you an excuse to make it faster! What was the cause of the valve breaking off? Were they stockers or aftermarket? Also can you give any info on the "Ferrea" replacements? Never heard of them...

The valves were stock, and I guess it's not too unususal for stock valves to break. I have APE springs, and never rev it past 11Krpm, so theoretically they should never break, but I guess this exhaust valve skipped that class. I do count myself lucky, it could've been much worse. I'm told that in the 'old days' that it was standard procedure to install stainless valves on a built motor.
Ferrea makes the best stainless and titanium valves out there for motorcycles, cars too I guess. Everybody I talked to swears by them. This will be my first set. http://www.ferrea.com/ They're in South Florida, so they got here in one day - real purty. $250 total with shipping & tax.
Tonite I'll drop the pan and find the chunk of piston, hopefully sitting peacefully at the bottom, with nice sharp edges. I went out last night, had a few Guinness, but I kept thinking about a little chunk of aluminum bouncing around the crank. Hi, I'm Dean, and I'm a accelloholic.
