it's all in the details

Here on the east coast it's raining and the local chatter is about the HA pres. getting shot.I wanted to go to Englishtown to watch the races but that is rained out also. With the wood stove blasting and the door to the garage open it has been warm enough to work on the bike.I have been putting around on it lately and got to the point today where the header was on and I was mounting the radiator when it struck me,the hose from the back of the cylinder was facing the wrong way. It hasn't been too bad yet.Undid the nitrous and boots, pulled off the radiator and unbolted front mounts, loosened rear eng. bolts and removed top one after holding motor up withbike lift.I thought I'ld pass on this little tale as you all sit and wait for your new bike or the weather.I never said I was a great mechanic but a good part of doing your own work is the stories behind the work.Just to prove God works in mysterious ways,in taking out the rear engine bolt, I found I had turned the spacer the wrong way and it wasn't up against the frame.I also had 4 acorns roll out of the coolant hose I removed to get to the back of the motor where the fitting I need to rotate is.Never saw that one coming. My back is loosening up finally so I'm going to try it again, hopefully the right way.Just remember,it's all in the details!

I just got done dropping the motor for the 3rd time today.I had it all together and was filling it up with water when it all poured out.Once again the thermostat had slid over during assembly. What am I doing wrong?Does anyone have a spare t-housing as it snapped off the corner this time?I'm getting good at dropping the motor.20 bolts and a bike lift-6 air box covers,8 tb boots,4-upper eng. mounts and radiator bolts,1 muffler bolt and 1 top rear eng. bolt.I add this because that would make the valve adjustments or cam timing easier.I didn't think I could leave everything on.Mind you, my chain is off rear sprocket.

Let me look, I have a spare cylinder sitting around. I dont remember if the thermostat housing is on it or not. If so I will let you know. You ever twist off those damn little bolts that hold the housing on? I twisted off one when i did my 1270 motor. PITA..

thanx ZXINT,I can relate to the snapped bolts as I've had my share.Usually a sign for me to walk away,so I don't get too fustrated.
At least now I'll be able to position the radiator hose better.Without the radiator,I wasn't sure how high up to position the hose when tightening on the housing.
