Red Elk is now packing!

At least when I get home tonight, I will be.

I picked up the "official" Muzzy fiberglas packing for my CF oval canister (which is the same for all the other canisters availabe for the 12R). This fiberglas is some weird shit. It ain't NOTHING like that dirtbike firberglas packing I had been using. I thought it might be some kind of hard "pressed tube" of fiberglas that just slid in over the center tube. It's not. It's also not like the fluffy, stringy dirtbike packing either.

It's a very dense (almost kinda heavy), tightly woven, angel hair-like material. What's weird about it is that when you hold the bag it comes in and raise on side, it almost "flows" like jello or some other kind of thick liquid. The overall quantity of packing is about equal to one package of dirtbike packing. I had THREE packages in my canister! Even after taking some out, it was still around two packages worth.

Because this packing is so dense, the back pressure it creates could be equal to 2 packages of the other kind. Though it might not change the A/F ratio that much (if at all), I'm pretty confident that it WON'T smell like burnt piss... like the other packing did.

Another thing that was weird is the price. On the website, the "RE-PAK KIT-ZX-12-Oval Carbon-2000" lists for $24.95 ($31.98 including shipping). My dealer's MSRP was $39.95. Now, my "employee discount" made it cheaper then that, but I was curious as to why ther was a difference. I never found out why. I guess it was because I never actully bother to ask.

The box it came in was almost as big as the canister itself. There was a reason why. Not only did it contain the "official" Muzzy packing ("a special high temperature, sound absorbing fiber material"), the package also containted a NEW CENTER CORE! It didn't have the finer mesh screen around it, but I'm wondering why this is part of the "kit"? Why didn't it come with the finer screen as well? Or at least the other way around (get the finer screen and use the original core)? It would seem that the finer screen would be the first thing to go

After 30K miles, both the core and sreen seem to be intact. Anyone got an idea on why they would send a new core? Doug?

hmmm

the finer screen "may" be more delicate when it comes to resisting heat and exhaust impulses but it may be what you need to retain the fibers that were "exiting" in the first place?
