Need info on clutch replacement
I know this has been asked a million times, but I am going to need to replace mine in the near future. So what is the best route on this. which clutch do you recommend and why,?Can I replace just the clutches and springs, or do I need to replace the spacers also? Where can I get the best price on the pieces? Any info would be appreciated. Unfortunately I haven't been on the board recently so haven't been keeping up on all the info, so be kind to the old/newbie
Thanks

Well have you taken apart your clutch yet? If the steel plates aren't burned or warped then yes you can reuse them. Myself I would do a Muzzy clutch kit, pretty much you can buy it for the same price or less than buying the pieces separately...

I have the Muzzy hub kit/plates/springs in mine and it's great. Still running the stock basket. I ride plenty hard/ fast ,never been to a drag strip. That's where the baskets are doomed. There were a few baskets that let go on the street, but if not for the internet making the world so much smaller, I would'nt even have known it. If you don't drag, and ride "normal", you'd be fine with the $300 hub/plate/spring kit.

Thanks for the info folks.
I ride somewhat aggressively, but due to the fact I drive for Fedex Freight and already have a ticket hanging over my head, not toooo aggressively. Rarely do I hard launch the bike, but if out on a country road will open it up. With the new group that I have been riding with I have been doing more riding up in the mountains and out in the country. Living in the city though (Seattle), the clutch does get a workout.
12r1 brought up a question I had in regards to the basket. As this isn't a drag bike will the stock basket suffice? This is a 2001 with the stock clutch and 7500 miles on it. I don't mind doing the kit, but I would rather not do the basket also.
As for kits what are your experiences? Muzzy - Barnett?

All ya need are these OEM Kawasaki items...
OEM part # 13088-1131 = this is the friction clutch plates - you need 12...
OEM part # 13089-1123 = this is the steel clutch plates - you need 11...
OEM part # 92144-1881 = this is the clutch springs - you need 6...
If you want more oil to the clutch plates then you need this =
OEM part # 13087-1183 = this is an improved clutch hub, there is nothing better than this item for oil to your clutch plates!!!
Go to your local Kawasaki dealer or www.RonAyers.com for a discounted price...
By the way, that is the clutch set up I use and change my clutch pack every 110 DragStrip passes!!!

Oh yeah, you know, drive for Fedex and your poor for the rest of your life . I have some buddies at work that I have been riding with, shoot me your number or I'll ping you here when we go next. There is also a ride they do around August down around St. Helens and to the border one day, then come back the other side the following day. Last time there were 17 bikes, Helluva lot of fun.
As for the 05 clutch, are the parts numbers the same as the ones CR gave me?

After reading this whole thread my question to you is WHY @ 7500 miles do you feel you need to replace your stock clutch?
If you don't drag/abuse the clutch the A model clutch holds up okay. Heat and lack of oil are it's enemy.
So are you replacing because its fried or because you just want to like an oil change?

I wish my clutches would last for 7500 miles, not like I drag race or anything.

Go Muzzy's. I switched to the Muzzy's clutch and basket and its just plain amazing. Holds up well to my shitty driving, hard launches and DOWNshifts .

Perhaps I am the unfortunated recipient of one clutch that doesn't make the grade, but on the last couple of rides I have noticed a problem and the other day when I did decide to take off from a light hard, I definetly got the response one gets when the clutch is starting to go. I too was very suprised to be dealing with this at this point in the bikes life

Maybe he is a fat ass like myself and them clutches just don't like us. I think stock should do ya just fine and/or just drill ya that pin hole in the hub. I have seen one basket go on a stock bike but the guy was much bigger than me and could lunch that thing hard. Check your screens if the fibers are worn. Schnitz has some nice springs for a good price, it'll keep that left forearm the same size as the right.
