2001 12R got traded in today for a..........

You guys are gonna call me a traitor for sure but..........
I pick up a new 2002 GSXR1000 next Friday.
My old suzuki dealer gave me a deal I couldnt refuse.
I will always love the 12r, but was looking for a lighter bike that had close to the power of the 12.
Anyway, save the flames.........bikeland.org has been a great place for info over the last year or so and I would like to thank everyone for their help.
Safe but fast riding to everyone.
Over to the darkside I go.......
Cheers

FUCKING MONOSYLLABIC IDIOT!!!

Sorry Smurfy, knee-jerk reaction, you know. I guess it all depends on what kind of riding you want to do. Do us a favor and report back and tell us how the 1000 REALLY is. I would expect that you would like it, (especially being a new toy) but if you could give an honest comparison to the 12 and other bikes you have owned, we would appreciate it. And don't say "it wheelies like mad" so does an old YZ 490. Or any of the old 2 strokes. Good luck.

PS. FYI: a flashing high beam means that somebody wants to pass you.

Dont worry no offense taken man. If i could have both i would of kept the 12r for sure.
Again my style of riding last year was more cornering than anything else so I felt i wanted to go with a bike more geared for that. I have no regrets and will always speak highly of the 12r.
Really there was only 1 bike I could really go for and still retain and good top end so the Gsxr1000 was an easy choice. I will give you guys an honest report and who knows one day in the future I'll have room for a 12r once again.
LOL with the highbeam thing, if it does happen so be it it could only be a 12r passing right?
Cheers

If my 12R went bye-bye tomorrow, it would be replaced with a GSXR-1000!!

Sounds like we have some more GSXR1000 fans in here.
Seriously though my main criteria for a bike is
FUN FACTOR which is regardless of manufacturer.
In the last 2 years I have owned a Hayabusa and a 12r, 2 bikes huge on fun factor. Both of them pushing the FF meter in different ways. I spent most of my summer last year strapped to the 12r learning to corner and do wheelies with the occasional high speed run. I am far from being an expert but after a full summer of that it was obvious I enjoyed learning to corner the most and started to appreciate what a lighter bike would give me.
The problem was after experiencing the top end / pull on a bike like the 12r, it was almost impossible to trade as it would be in the wrong direction. Now I feel that I am sacrificing a bit of top end (not much), but gain a bike that is alot lighter and far more flickable in the corners, the question is will the FUN FACTOR be there. I think finding the answer to that question will be what my summer will be all about.
LETS RIDE!

Well have fun on your Suz, Sue zoo, Suuuzoo, damn I can't say it. Enjoy your new bike.

It's all good, have fun, ride safe. We'll wait for you at the end of the long straights if you wait for us after the curves let up.

I love my 12r with a 1270 but would have to say the highest fun factor(and comfort) was my 99 zx9r with a wiseco kit at145 rwhp.It is tough to beat a real light bike with good power. If I sold my 12 today I think I would build a 9r with a simple blow-through turbo with 10psi of boost good for about 180 hp.My product loyalty to the big K is pretty deep but I must admit that those gixxers and r-1's have got me thinking more than once!

I am sure you will have fun!! I am lucky enough to own a 2000 12r (usual stuff - Akra, PCIIIr, K&N's, Marvics etc)as well as an 01 R1 with several mods - full Akra, Attack Performance Ram Air box, 41mm Flatslides, Yosh cams, Marvics, Spiegler brakes etc etc. Back to back on the dyno the 12 made 179.8 and the R1 made 160.2. Crunch the numbers and the R1 has it. Both are completely awesome but have different manners. Enjoy the gixxer and save up for another 12r!!

Wow, I am actually pleasantly surprised at the responses here...Obviously the GSXR1000 has caught the attention of a few 12r owners which is alright. Obviouslyyou guys understand what the GSXR brings to the table in terms of rideability and performance.
I looked at the new R1 as well but my good buddy just bought one, so it will be fun to be able to ride both this summer. I think overall package this year the R1 edges out the GSXR but again coming down from a 12R i had to go with the bike that had the closest stats in power as well.
I also have another good friend who has a 12R and I am sure he will be dying to try out the GSXR which means i'll get to ride a 12 now and then so life could be worse.
I'll definitely report back the +'s an -'s of the bike compared to the 12R as soon as the break in is done.
At first it was very tough for me to get rid of the 12R cuz there is a bit of attachment but hey its only a bike and why not experience different types of bike if you get the chance. Isnt that what riding is all about?
Maybe Kawi will come out with a liter bike next year, if they do I'm sure I'll get the trade in itch again especially if it comes in 12r green.
Cheers

It is strange that no one mentioned the new Honda...

12 owners (I have noticed) tend to give other bikes their due. Maybe that is because they have been on the other side of that equation since day one. Or maybe that is the kind of person that is drawn to a bike like this. I don't know.

I could'nt ride the gixxer very long, The postion. But if i wanted a corner bike, I'd buy a used 98 or later 750 gixxer or ZX-7 and keep the ZX-12R.

Only if....

A few months ago, I rode a Gixxer 1K. I said that if my dealer carried 'zooks... my 12R would be history. I told Zturb0 that it was the most fun I'd ever had on a bike in my life. Of course, that title was short lived when I rode a MV Agusta F4 Strada (http://www.mvagustausa.com/2002_new/02_f4s1p1/F41plus1three4_1024.jpg). Since the MV doesn't have the power of the GSXR and costs almost twice as much, the MV was never in the running as Elk's next bike. Still, when compared the the GSXR 750, I thought the MV was superior. Still costs too much.

There is NOTHING I could say against the Gixxer 1K. It's everything I'd want in a bike. Sadly, though I don't "bleed green", I am dealer loyal. Our local 'zook dealer is so bad, all the Gixxer and Busa owners have their bikes serviced elsewhere. Other 'zook dealers in a 100 mile radius could talk to you about ATVs and dirtbikes all day long. They don't have a clue about sportbikes. My dealer has ALWAYS taken real good care of me and my bikes. I'm stuck waiting on the street version of the ZX-RR.

Hey RedElk

In your honest opinion did you see alot of difference
power wise between the 1000 and the 12R. Very curious as i have never been on 1 b4. I know for sure it will be alot nicer in the twisties so no worries there. But the power, how did it feel?

It's funny...

Now the 1000 is yesterday's news. I have read plenty on how much better the 954 and R1 are.

The press is so stupid. If was the greatest thing last year, how can it be so "second class" this year?

Yeah its pretty funny, the gsxr1000 is taking a beating in the press this year and the bike hasnt changed from last year.
Now there is no doubt the R1 raised the bar with this years bike in terms of total package. But still lacking a bit in power.
I guess the reviews come down to who hand is in who's pocket when it comes to writing these reviews.
Oh well dont affect my decision at all.
Next Friday will be a fun day!

IMHO

The 1K's power delivery is COMPLETELY different. "Electric motor-like" doesn't even do the 1K justice. The 12R's power (and the Busa's) is nothing short of "brutish". The way the 12R's power can so quickly come on still startles me after 30K miles.

The 1K is frightfully deceptive. You keep waiting for that "punch" and it never comes. THEN, you look down at the speedo and your doin' 110 as your are rapidly approaching that 20 mph right hander. I felt that if I had a 1K, one of two things would happen. I'd either shoot of some corner because I did realize how fast I was going or I'd lose my license for the same reason.

The funny part is the part I liked the most is the part that many others HATE the most. The seating position. True to Suzuki's past, the pegs are very rear set. I felt like I was so far up on the tank, that I was looking at the front fender. Comfort is NOT it's strong suit. I'm sure that I could get used to it, but I might also have to make an appointment at the chiropractor.

The reason I liked it was because of the confidence it instilled in me and how it made attacking the corners a lot easier. I didn't get to ride it long enough (about 15~20 miles) to determine how exactly I should enter and exit a corner. Most of the time, I was turning WAY TOO SOON as I'd go into a corner (vs. my 12R) and would find myself having to correct my line. Bayliss, I am not!

The MV Agusta was very similar to the 1K in handling. I guess why I liked the MV more is because being a 750, I wasn't able to get in over my head (as quickly). Like the 12R, the 1K DEMANDS respect. Just in a different way. Both will give you a boost of confidence in your riding skills, yet bot can just as easily take that boost away.

When I realized how fast I was going through corners, it scared the shit out of me. It took a few miles to settle back down and just quit looking at the damn speedo (being digital makes it too damn EASY to read). Still, when it comes to cornering, the 12R is like a chainsaw that cuts with relentless power. The 1K is more like a laser scalpel.

It's wheelbase and rake/trail numbers would make one think that it'd be twitchy at high speeds, but it seemed very stable at 130. I was too much of a wuss to go much higher on somebody ELSE'S BIKE! Even doing the 130 wasn't intentional. I didn't feel like I was even getting close to 100. It's that deceptive.

Still, it's light weight and short steering geometry does give it a slightly less "planted" feel then the 12R. The 1K is forgiving, but I had the feeling that if I made a wrong move, I wouldn't be able to as easily correct it and could just as easily OVER correct. That's probably due my to my "riding skill level" (or lack there of).

Since your purpose for this bike is purely "FF" (fun factor) in the twisties, there is no way you could go wrong with the 1K. In all honesty, I'm sure the same could basically be said for the R1, but I have not been on a R1 in a long time. At this point in time, I firmly believe that the 1K is truly Red Elk's definition of what the "ultimate sportbike" should be.

That's just my opinion.

As always........

your replies and posts are full of useful info Red Elk.
Thanks for the review! Its nice to hear real world opinions instead of biased bike reviews from mags.
I am pretty sure it will be the bike I envision it being your post confirms it.
Again I am all about Fun Factor and it sounds like the GSXR1000 will have no issues maxing out that meter.
Thanks again, cant wait to get it next week.
