OT! Otis, Your Opinion on Speed Skating @ the Olympics?

I am not saying anything more than this. A little history was made the other day and there seems to be some People Pissed (Totally refused to acknowledge this feat when asked) at the Gold Metalist because he would not skate a "Team" Race that he was never supposed to be in so this person could possible get another metal. Understand that he was on record stating that He would "Never take someone elses Place in the Olympics"! (Not to mention that before he became great, none of them wanted anything to do with him). SInce I like your opinion and KNOW you are as fair ar you know how to be, what do you say about this?

I have very strong feelings about this entire situation.... man when Davis won the gold I was very proud for him and thought Wow that is awesome he just set history!! I am so happy for him... Then I saw the interview............ and I thought what a complete Ass!!! this guy is so full of himself he never said more then 5 words..... I almost felt sorry for him. I really did not know what to feel, I just could not believe that a "man" had just won a gold metal in the olympics and it was like he really did not give a crap, and he knew he was going to win..
from the looks of this it is a lot deeper then just the point that Davis would not race in the team event.... I am happy he did not take anyone's spot.... but I do not feel he is being anything like a team player... not practicing with the team, not speaking with anyone, not dealing with the coaches. and here is what Hendrik actuall said

"What about Shani?

"Shani skated fast today, that is about all I have to say."

I dont see that as good or bad for two people who dont even like each other....

I think Davis could have handleded this like a champion. He did not.... and that is the only reason there is any problems, he could have easily made Hendrik look like an ass....

I am watching this also. Like you, I was surprised at his reaction to winning the Gold and remember that after all of the Words people had said to me before I won the Final Open Superbike race at Summit point, I have a better understanding

I won the race and beat people like Dale Quarterly and I was Happy. I wheelied out of every turn while I was on the course. I then pulled into the Pits and several people that truly knew me congradulated me by Nodding their Heads with that Knowing look. I put the Bike in the Van, Changed my cloths and sent a friend to the Trophy Presentation and had him bring it home to me.

When you have been treated horribly for years and it is Finally Over, You are spent. I barely made it home and until the other day had not even thought about it until I realized what I saw on his face. (I too had made a Promise to myself. For Years I had seen the Big Shots Cherry Pick races and take the Trophies and money from the little people that supported the Club Racing. To that end I would wait until the second lap to start the race and wait for the leaders to pass. I would then see if I could Catch and pass the leaders before the end of the race. Problem was they would feel cheated of their full Glory but get the money and Trophies. So after years of Hearing that I could not win from the front and that all I was ever there to do was not pratice but "Mess up the races". I qualified and started in front and raced the race and on the last turn on the last lap I caught and passed the leader and beat him to the finish line. I was happy I did it but Pissed that I HAD been put into a position I never wanted to be in. That was my Last ever WERA Race Ever!

I am personally glad that the good people here may never understand the emotions that some people have had to go through. Barbara Who without her help I could never have done it was not able to make the race and missed it. I think his Mother was not there in person either. I am betting that had an effect also. AWH the Problems with Being Human! You are a good person Mr. Mike and I mean that from the Bottom of my heart.!

I think Davis could have acted like a champion. He did not

This only hurt one person. It hurt Davis IMHO. Anger is not endorsed $$$$ in America.

I had mixed feelings about his winning, glad he made history but disappointed in his actions. Not that it surprised me, I had already heard a lot of stuff about him before the Olympics. I think Davis is just doing what he and his mother have done all along, worried only about him and no one else. He has never tried to be part of the US "team" and shouldn't expect them to be to excited for him. If any other athlete had acted like he has, the press would have crucified them. Because he is a "black winter athlete" they make exception to his actions.
Bode Miller is probably one of the richest US winter athletes, he still stays in the dorms with the rest of the athletes and doesn't act like he's better than any of them.

Well, I'm sorry I can't be of help to you on this and offer an opinion Vinnie but so far the only thing I have watched of the Olympics is the Women's Half pipe or whatever it's called where the American's took 1-2-3. That is the only thing I have seen or paid attention too and quite frankly that was by accident when flipping the channels.

Sorry brother. Do you have any links to articles that will explain what happened? I don't even know who Davis is.

Good to see that everyone is "Fairly" on the same page! Yes, Waay to bad that he will not get any endorsements, but I think he really did not care. Until you have gone through things like he has and can look at the Baggage he is carrying just no way to understand "What Was he thinking"!

We had a preacher at my church that I loved to hear. Great story teller without all of the Shouting, Jumping up and down . The problem was, he was carrying BIG Baggage and once he left the Pulpit, he was no longer God's Man but his own man and no one could stand him one on one! He finally had to leave and not one pastor since has caused any problems but none I like to hear either.

The guy is a great skater, but the price he had to pay may have been too great. Mohammed Ali also paid a Great price and a lot of people HATED Him. Eventually people understood and now he is Beloved. I do not see that happening in this guy's case unless he writes a book and explains the How and Why of it all.

Being Human, I cannot wait until Tuesday for the Show down between the 2 of them.

Otis, Watch the 1500 meter race. It is 500 Meters Longer than Davis usually races and 500 Meters Shorter than the Other guy races. It will show if the Tortus can run down the Hare.

Vince I think Hendrik is worse than Davis, he's like a kid. You can help me win a gold or I wont be your friend. Davis did the right thing! Skating isn't a "Team" sport, none of these other people come to Rogers Park and train with him. A guy from Hyde Park "south side of Chicago" won a gold God Bless him. Don't get me started on Bode "I talk shit about other athletes" Miller. He shouldn't stay in the dorms either, he might turn the other participatants into losers. Hendrik in my opinion was looking out for himself trying to beat Eric Heiden. Now he won't and he's angry. GO DAVIS!!!!!

It's about as easy picking out Davis at the Winter Olympics as it is picking out Vincent at a Land Speed event!
I like guys who go against the grain but are not too cocky about their accomplishments. Score one for Vince and zero for Davis.

Dan My Cousin Butch decided to be Cool when he came to Maxton and was going to ask for His COusin "Peggy"! Before he could open his mouth they were telling him Exactl where I was pitted and where I was! I tried to warn him but he had to find out for himself!

BTW, when I am at Maxton, the Only Way I know I am about the only one there with a Tan is by looking in the WIndow or Mirror. Some people in my family do not treat me that good. When I was putting the bike on the stand and ifell knocking Peggy over, People had Peggy before she hit the ground and made me feel bad because I I set the Bike up before checking on Peggy ("First things First")

What I think I am saying is, Better people Better Results. Where else can I actually say what is on my mind and actually get help other than here. I have really been upset over a few things and getting the real feelings from the people here has changed me (Maybe not a lot but I have changed) Highlight of my life is still the award I got from the good people of Arkansas when Charles Franks called me from Iraq and asked me to check on his friends in Walter Reed AMC that had been USD in a HumVee and Drowned. I went every day and sent E-Mails to everyone until they were Discharged. Even when I break 200+, that is what I am MOST Proud of!

Don't get me wrong, I'll be pulling for Davis over Hendrik for sure. Davis just acted like he could care less about being there or winning a gold. Yes most events are individual accomplishments but he still should be proud to represent the US. Maybe we're just to spoiled in the US, we just expect to win. Look at how proud most athletes from other countries are to win. Most of the US athletes couldn't train and survive if it weren't the the US support but they don' t seem to appreciate it? After reading some things about Davis's mom I see where the guy is under a lot of pressure, may be hard for him to enjoy the moment?

no he enjoyed it actually 5 min. after the NBC interview... I saw a video of him talking to Japaniese TV and he was going nuts so happy and shaking his fist.... doesent he realize that 90% of the people want to see him win because he is an american.... period... It was almost like he turned his back on the USA? which I dont understand at all?

Agreed, MM, except the Country first turned their back on him when it came to training which is why he had to go to Canada to train so maybe it was just plain and simple Pay Back! I also saw the interview with the other Country Television. SOme things come at too high a price and as far as being US Supported, I do not think they paid the Canadians for his training. SInce he qualified they had to give him his cloths and that is about it. I think if his Mom could have been there it would have made a huge difference in his reaction after he won. I think #1 he did it for Her, #2 Himself and #3 the Country

NoBODY Told the Italian!!

An Italian won the Gold and Davis finished .16 of a second behind him and Hedrick finished .25 of a second behind so that Davis took the SIlver and Hedrick got the Bronze. SO Davis did beat Hedrick but did not win the Gold.
