Saw an interesting new valve actuator...

I got an email from a friend with some pictures of a new varriable cam timing mechanisim. It had a wedge type shoe that could truely varry the cam timing and lift with infinate adjustment within its range. Kinda like a frying pan thing. It could be servo actuated by computer as fast as .01 seconds from thin to thick. Very, very cool. That sucker could be set to change with the throttle position if someone developed it to. Or it could work off oil pressure.
There wasnt a price on it, its not in production yet.

Once this type of technology is perfected these motors will really make some usable HP. Neat stuff. Now if they can just perfect the 2 stroke then we will really have something.

i tend to think the electromagnetic valves are the ultimate variety of VVT, but would suspect this method would gfind its way to production much sooner. the problems and potential failures of the electric versions just seem a bit too much to overcome right now. mind you, don't they use them in F1? i thought they did for some reason. I even seem to remember seeing a picture of a EM actuated valves head one time in a magazine. think it was for a car, but not sure who built it. i could look for it, but would take me forever.

Well my friend, two strokes are going to be a thing of the past unless they can seperate the lubrication from the a/f charge. Its been done on several engines. The best I've seen was a mechanically supercharged version with rotary drum valves. It was 300cc and made 135hp and spun to 18,000 rpm. It burns methanol and had a life expectancy of about 4 hours total run time.
Bimota tried 3 versions of a direct injection engine that had fuel dilivery issues and eventually they went back to a carb.

Electromechanical would be the ultimate I guess. But pneumatic is here now and in use for several years on the best of the best. But the actuators are proprietairy information and I've never seen an accurate detailed version of anyones.
I did see a crude drawing of one that honda was using about 5 years ago.

Yeah, although I hate to admit it. The solution is an air fuel injection that can come close to just charge the cyl, and instant success.
