I thought something like the voyager probe was the fastest thing built by man... isn't it going faster away from the solar system.. or something..?

No Mike, picture credits go to NASA.

And it's NASA that says it's the fastest. The release says "Though the craft will be the fastest space probe ever launched -- it will reach speeds of 36,000 mph -- it will take nine years for the New Horizons probe to reach its destination" That makes it the fastest propelled by man vehicle.

That being said Voyager 1's current speed is 39,000 mph but only because of the gravitational slingshot which this probe will do and increase speed.

If you want to talk gravity fast Helios 2 is estimated to be traveling around 150,000 mph but it's considered a satellite and not a vehicle.

All I really know is that the launch looked cool from here.

My brain hurts now.

Apparently it took it 9 hours to reach the distance of the Moon's orbit...

In contrast, the Apollo spacecraft took 3 days!
