Nicasil bore plating...
Has anyone done any milling to the block with this plating? Does it flake off? Chip?

I was told it would flake on the perimeter.

I brought this up in a prior thread (as a joke) as we all know standard honing/boring techniques won't work with Nikosil and somebody suggested that a diamond impregnated honing bore would work in theory.
I've never seen such an animal but if you find one and try it let us know how it works.

Yea it would be hard to say how it would hold up on an edge. I would guess that would be the easiest place for it to flake away. I know that in the cylinder way it will take a beating. We had a Jesel lifter break the roller tip and some parts found there way to the bottom of the motor. The crank was tossing parts up into the bores and it never chipped the coating. Beat the piss out of it but never chipped it anywhere. This was a car motor with nicasil liners. Sort of the same I guess

I'm told you have to use a surface grinder to mill a nikasil-ed block. Millennium ground .003" off mine to true it up.

When I had my cylinder replated due to a head gasket failure, I also asked them to true up the cylinder. .005 is what they had to take off the cylinder. Be sure you ask them how much. You will have to add a shim to make up the difference under the cylinder depending on clearances.

well the reason for the question is actually because I want to mill windows in the block.
So i guess i should ask, if milling windows in the nicasil lined cylinder will it chip?

It would appear that if those windows were milled first it would be a NON issue. Hmmmm.. Food for thought if I ever bore my own 12. Thanks Jim for keeping us all thinking. A little prevention is worth a lot of cure eh??

Well I called millieum and they say it might chip and flake a small amount close to the cut.
But seeing as how its going to get radiused and reshaped after the cut and the rings nor piston will ever touch the window area, it doesnt seem it will be an issue.
