shims
Am I limited to just the dealers when it comes to valve shims or are there other options?

Only complaint I have is after doing four 12's this year, 230's and 235's I am out of, even after buying a refill pack.
My experience has been a 225-240 kit would cover every 12 I have worked on and I would not have the worthless <> shims wasting money in the box, but all in all its a great kit for the $$$.
I am going to call the company I posted above though (or MadMike) because I want X number of XXX size shims.
Thats all I ask.

Can you use two 120 shims to make 240 or should you use one shim only? My ZX12R is the first non screw and nut valve adjustment for me.
Thanks,
David

Don't think that would be the best thing because the shims sit inside the retainer.
It would be easier to spit a shim if it only had half the distance to get out the pocket.

You most definitely would never want to try that.
Conversely you never want to grind a shim either.

I can see why some have gone with a wider hayabusa spring cap after measuring valve lash.Wouldn't that give a longer duration?I wonder how much of an effect that would make on the power band.

Can't see how without tighten the clearance.

The way my engine is angled right now,it looks like the cam lobe hits the edge of the valve bucket.Didn't know if having a bigger bucket would have the valve opening sooner and closing later.

Can I purchase individual shims from you Mike?
I'd like to replenish my kit so I have what I need the next time the need arises. There are two or three sizes I am just about out of.

All too thick for me. Are they 9.48mm shims?

Ruger, Look at it this way. Let's hypothetically say the shim bucket is recessed to hold the shim obviously. The shoulder height is 110. Installing a 120 shim gives you 010 height out of the bucket. If you install two 120's...kind of see how this can't be done? How can you hold the second shim in place over the other one?.... make a shim twice as thick.
Aliveagain, A wider cap is just that...wide. If the spring cap is just wider and has the same measurement in height as a stock cap, then there is no effect. Were the bucket holes machined to accept larger shim buckets? Are you installing a high lift cam?
You can take a clump of grease, place some on the shim, and bucket, then rotate the cam lobe to wipe over it. Check to see if there are any contact lines on the bucket viewing the grease wiped away? If this is an unmodified stock cam and shim bucket system, then there is no way a lobe hits the bucket first. The design simply won't allow it. Your valve clearance determines when the lobe makes contact on the shim.
Decrease shim clearance (from stock), and yes, you can increase top end mph. Widen the gap.. brings the torque downstairs.

I assume you mean diameter?
Oh well, more like 13mm. Thought we'd get lucky.

You can xref whatever you want there.
Sadly, I've got some pretty big dollars tied up in my shim kits and my new R1 uses the 7.48mm not the 9.48mm like the 12's.

A larger tappet wouldALLOW you to use a cam with more lift, but simply using one with a stock cam won''t change anything. The tappet diameter and installed spring height are critical design parameters in the cylinder head and must be balanced against desired cam lift.
