Red, there is a foam filter inside in square can inside the aitbox so it is tough to see the oil. Also you can see the valves by looking through the throttle bodies( open of course). Some of this may be water vapor(condensation) finally being turned into gas. Or it could be my favorite thing to blame the PC3 turning to shit. You wouldn't be the first to have one of those things puke.

I think your problem is too rich mixture, along with some oil ring leakage. just installed the 1270 and damaged one of the oil ring(scrapers rings) when I rev the engine(high) I get the same color spoke.(bluishgrey) How many miles did you say you have on your bike. I would try some lucus oil treatment with your next oil change and lean out your mix throughout the rev ranges. The lower the number the richer the mix. Hope this helps you

Hmmmmm....
Both worth considering Ted & JT.
Ted, where exactly is this "square can" in the airbox? Can you access the foam filter inside it? The PCIII crapping out is a true possibility. I'm still trying to figure out how my A/F ratios dropped so much after changing maps that have little difference between them (before I checked the TPS).
JT, a worn or damaged ring wouldn't show up on a compression check? Are you saying the LOWER the number in the cells of the PCIII softwear richens the mixture?

The square can is at the rear of the air box, the foam cannot be easily accessed, I think they stuff it in through the hole or something. Also a blown oil control ring will not show up on a compression test. IMHO it is highly unlikely that you have a blown ring, in my experience which includes rebuilding countless motorcycle engines, those things usually have to wear out and it takes alot more miles to do that. Anyway the oil control rings usually wear along with the compression rings.
Sometimes you get buildups of fuel, condensation, oil, etc in hoses, pockets, wherever. When you increase the pressures by revving up the engine or what ever they are sucked out and blow through the engine causing puffs of smoke. I'm not saying this is your problem but it sure is a possibility. I have seen condensation build up in exhaust pipes then when enough hot gas flowed by it would pick it up and guess what? A puff of grey smoke. Ride the thing, disconnect the PC3 and see if it goes away.

Weather permitting...
That's exactly what I plan on doing. There's a lot of "freaky things" that have happened since I did everything last weekend. Things like NO smoke at all and substancially lower halmeter readings. It does have me wondering about the PCIII. I think that only actual "road testing" will answer many of my questions. That's going to have to wait until this weekend.

I didn't mention oil in the airbox ONLY because I KNOW Red is "in his bike" more often than MOST people...
Yes Red...if you are getting a "noticable amount" of oil vapors through your box...you WILL see and feel it in there...
I am working on (well more like staring at...waiting for parts money ) a ZX12 that had a LOT of oil in the airbox! The owner did NO maintanence AND over filled the motor with oil...the drain hose coming out of the airbox was FULL to the point of...1/8 inch deep IN THE AIRBOX...EEEK!!!
I still say it's rich...it will be VERY hard to tune by reading your plugs since there are SO many cells in a map...
You couldn't even tune at WFO ONLY since there are cells in 500rpm increments IMO...
Lower #s in the MAP...ARE LEANER...
Also...our dyno guy tunes for max PERFORMANCE at about 13.2...he says he can get more HP on PAPER by going leaner but REAL WORLD conditions (ram-air included) like to be a bit richer...13.2
Hard to argue with 9.03 @ 151 to show for it?!?!?!

That's "polite". kcadby!
For sayin' I have NO LIFE!
Still, your right. Just about every time it's a rainy weekend, below 45 degrees or at least once a month... my "baby" and I play strip poker. I strip everything off the bike but the engine and wiring and then I start pokin' around. Clean this, inspect that, replace this (WELL... I had two of 'em!) and so on.
I might spend part of a Saturday hanging out with the folks in the shop or the parts dept., but Sunday there's nothing else to do. I'm not married (they say my bike doesn't count) and my kids are "grown up" (always up for debate).
They've been "worried" about me for the past few years. Instead of taking an "adult" magazine to the bathroom, I take my service manual. The part that worries them is that I moan louder.

Oh come on Harry!
I just don't want to blow up my engine... like you did.
Oh wait, I'd have to first use my riding skills to turn my bike into a earth mover on War Woman Road... THEN, blow my engine up!
Nevermind.

Thats right
Bitch : Hey , that was the first wreck I've had since I was 19 and I'm 46 now.I also now have a better bike , suspension wise and a new motor. Not that I'm glad I wrecked or blew up my engine. It's bad karma to make fun of one's misfortune , cause you never know when it might bite you in the ass.Personally , I don't make fun of wrecks or bad things happening to their bike, but that's just me.I was always glad it wasn't my own misfortune. When you think your invincible and such a safe rider, reality could set in.
I will never change the way I ride.I try and learn all I can , but I LOVE to go fast in a straight line and around corners.Lead, follow or get the fuck outa my way!

So it's like that eh?
Pull the old "make the Elk feel guilty" card, will ya? Well, you know...
1. That I can't "lead" (WAY too slow)
2. That to "follow" requires me to be able to keep the other in sight (WAY too much of a wuss)
3. That to "get the fuck outta your way" requires me to be in front (please refer to first statement)
My riding style reminds me more of an old Firesign Theater album... "How Can You Be In Two Places At Once, When Your Not Anywhere At All?" I still love ya though... penis breath!
