***UPDATE*** about fuel pump going bad

I went to RacewayPark Englishtown, NJ today, unload the bike strap her down then start her up...The 12 started for about 2 seconds then stalled out, fast idle was on...So, I started it again and the same thing...Thinking to myself it's been down to 35 degrees for the past 3 nights so I dismissed the stalling out at first...

Then it started to just crank and crank...Now I noticed that the fuel pump was not making any noise when you turn the key on...All I could do was check the fuses, disconnect the wires from under the fuel pump and re-connect, turn key on and nothing, but the relay clicking as usual...No FI light blinking either!!!

I would say that the pump went bad, since I have been using MR9 for the past 3 racing seasons leaving it in during the season, but during the winter I drained out the MR9 and put in pump gas...

I have an extra pump, but cant do anything till next saturday, need to work extra hours this week...Any input from an experience with the fuel pumps or any similar situations would be greatly appreciated!!!

By the way my 12 is a 2002 with the plastic fuel pump!!!...2000 and 2001 pumps are different and have no problems with race gas, as far as I know...

Thanks for any help you guys give!!!

**********Here's what I found when checking the 12 using the KISS method **********

I disconnected the clips from the fuel pump on the bike and connected them to my spare turned the power on and heard the sweet sound of the fuel pump motor!!! Put the new fuel pump in added pump gas and it started right up...Ahhh good as new!!! So, just what I thought the problem was, the MR9 deteriated the internal operation of the pump motor somehow...My buddy Steve and I took the pump motor out of the housing and inspecting the housing but not finding any visible problems...He's going to break open the pump motor and see whats up if anything visible to the eye!!!

Then we changed the plugs with the OEM part # plugs...What a pain in the butt getting to the coils, then trying to get the coils off because of only 5 inches of room under the frame...We ended up prying the coil up from the base with a screw driver at its strongest point making sure not to break them...Getting the plugs out and back in was easier then dealing with the coils...The plugs were in real good shape since using MR9 fuel for 3 DragRace seasons putting a total of 3290 miles with over 800 DragStrip passes on the 12 !!!...Then we had to use a pry bar as leverage against the frame and top of coil to get the coil snapped onto the plug!!!

I'm ready for the 2006 DragRace season!!!...Too bad it's 35 degrees out with snow on the ground from 2 nights ago

I think it may be your battery volt level.

If the pump does not run when you turn the key, that's a pretty good indication it's related.

I have had a low battery not allow the fuel pump to pump. but the bike would not turn over either... I would have to lean toward the pump being bad also, if the bike cranks over fine....

Fuel pump relay. You can by pass it and check the pump.
I'm currently not remembering which wires to jump, maybe somebody can suggest, BUT don't pick the wrong ones or you'll fry the ECU.

This problem is Usually ECU Related. This Happened to me and finally nothing. The left side Relay bypass the way DM showed for draining the tank will work if the ECU is fine. If the ECU is bad, you must jump other wires on the Relay to get the pump to work

Take a piece of lead tin solder about 1.5 inches long and bend it into a "U" Shape push 1 end in the lower left and the other in the lower right side of the Relay. If the ECU is fine the pump will work. If it does not work, then jump the upper right side and the Lower Right Side of the Relay and the Pump will work if the ECU is Bad. If neither of these work then the Pump "May" be bad. The Only reason I say "May" is I am not sure if it is the left upper and lower or the left Upper and lower right you Jump. Play around a little the worse you can do is blow a fuse. dan has my Spare ECU to see if that is the problem. I hope that neither test work for you so it is "NOT" the ECU and "IS" the Pump. A Pump is a LOT Cheaper than a ECU! Sorry I did not look earlier and hope this helps get you to the bottom of the problem quick.

hey guys does this sound like a bike down switch problem. i know a guy that came down from a wheelie hard and caused this same reaction. i think it cuts the pump off when activated for safety reasons. just throwing something out there. he may have replaced a battery or something and disturbed it. u know the battery box is a pain. getting rough wit it aint uncommon.
