strange noise
I just put the bike back together after getting the frame chrome plated. Have a strange sound when I turn the ignition. I also had the FI light come on while it was running. I twould go off when I blip the throttle then come back on. Fired it up this morning and the light didn't come on, so I guess it worked itself out. But the noise is still there. Its not the fuel pump. It sounds like its coming from the top end of the engine. And my fans are not working. I have tried jumping the switch and it didn't work. The bike is an 04 ZX12. Could it be something dealing with the air switching valve or the acuator.

Any codes showing up ?I don't know what you mean by air switching valve. Is your fuel return line pinched?

if you did not do any motor work I would say you have an exhaust leak.
if you did some motor work, did you check your valve clearance? speaking from experience here....

no motor work. it makes the sound when you turn on the ignition. Its not like my 02 it has an air switching valve and acutator that goes to the reed valves. not sure how it works but you just cant take them off and put the muzzy caps on. there is some electrcal connections so I guess its tied into the system somehow.

If the caps aren't seating properly it makes a noise. Shouldn't make any FI problems thouhg. When You put the caps on did You remember to plug the remaining holes to throttle bodies and air box?

I did not put the caps on. I am saying that you can not do that on the 04 as easy as the previous models because you have an electrical circuit invovled.

Assuming you still have the Kleen Air (should have taken that off if you didn't) OR left the Kleen Air covers on and blocked them off look for a leak there first.
If the Kleen Air ports are open or not sealed properly they make a hell of a racket that sounds like either a really bad exhaust leak or running a motor without shims.
There is a sensor on the back of the cylinder bank (A model, not 100% on the location on the B) that is really easy to knock off and will put up a red FI everytime, but it will be intermittent depending on coolant temp. Easy to miss that one and hard to see when the bike is together.
