Doug Meyer a Questions about Dogs

Transmission Dogs. Robinson states that he cuts his dogs at 6 degrees and that stock is 5 degrees. I seem to remember a lot steeper angle back in the day. My question is, do you think the difference of 1 degree in back cut is a problem?

I plan to first look at the set up and see what if anything there is for space between the dogs by visually and then using plasti gauge 2nd and simple silicone 1st (Put a small dab on the dogs and let it dry a little and then engage the gears with a little grease on the other gear for a no stick engagement. If I see very little contact area I am sending him the gears. If I see a lot of contact area then I will clean and check with Plastic Gauge to KNOW how much contact area.

What do you think / suggest I do?

I prefer Labradors......
Oh, never mind. depends on the depth of the dog, doesn't it?. (degrees over distance = is it sine or cosine? I don''t remember) but you know what I mean. I think a your method is interesting and just might work. At least it's finally a good use for all that plastiguage all you guys got laying around.
I'm inferring that you are going to attempt to use mating gears with different back cut angles, no? Probably not such a good idea. But if I was looking a some broken gears and I had one more run to make a record or a final, I'd try it.

OK, That does it. I will have the gears matched. My feeling was a 100% match would would stress each dog the least over the greatest amount of area. Spending this much time and money, what is another $80 to $100 Now that I have my debts under control and breath like the rest of you I guess I can deal with it!

I prefer a product called " Prussian blue " a.k.a. machinists dye , if memory serves me correctly for checking the dogs contact patch , plastigage might be a bit tedious for even the most stubborn-patient? among us ....

I thought about the Dye, but there is no easy way to move the gears up and down on the shaft to make a contact patch. Plus it will not tell you How big a gap you have either

The gap size - no , just contact patch area but that is the biggest concern right ? And to get the same contact on all the dogs to match in all positions is tedious as hell but , IMO worth the time . Up and down on the shaft ? Are you referring to the gap between the gears when the dogs are engaged ?

Am I understanding correctly, Mr Hill, that if my gears are 6 degrees, which they quite possibly are, then I may need to send some or all of the remaining stock gears to Mr Robinson or elsewhere to be cut to match? It sounds like it but just to be clear.

Thanks!

Trenace , You are correct. "Some" of the gears. the "4" that are in contact with the new gears will need to be sent to him for matching

Junior I was referring to getting the gear dogs to remove the dye wo see what the contact patch was by moving them up and down a little which you cannot do on the shaft. sliding them together will remove the dye and tell you nothing

Now if someone would make the gears with 3 dogs, or 6, and I could cut them here in my father in law's machine shop................, I would be a happy man.

Cheeseman is right..........

I suggest you leave it stock

"Wasted Energy" comes to mind.

I can think of a lot better things you could be doing to reach your goals. Time is valuable, why are you wasting it on this?

Talk to the guys with bikes who can cut every other dog on their gears......

You can lower the kill time, plus, if it spins going down track, it will still shift............

On a loose track, it can mean winning or losing......., or in the 100 degree heat......., when no track will hold........, like Memphis Nopi did this year..........

Reliability is everything........

I got that arm boxed up and ready for ya btw.
