POSSIBLE BOARD SHUTDOWN

Hi guys, and galz,

We've got some bad news to report - we may unexpectedly have to go down and move the site at an undisclosed time in the near to semi-near future. This is due to external political factors governing our hosting.

We truly hope that this isnt the case - but if it happens we'll be scrambling to try come up with a resolution as quickly as possible.

It may mean that we will be forced to move to more expensive facilities - if that happens, I dont know how Freek, Fish and myself will be able to cover it all - I suppose we'll figure something out.

Sorry for any troubles....

OKay, here's the scoop:

The hosting company which provides our servers and our bandwidth has been giving us a "sweetheart deal" which has allowed this site to exist and grow with only 2 paying sponsors.

Currently Muzzy and Spencer Cycle have footed the entire bill to allow Bikeland and the ZX12R Zone to exist. The amount of money they have paid has EXACTLY covered the cost of the bandwidth we have used. Due to political problems within the hosting company itself, we will most likely have to move our operation.

The problem we face is that some favours were called in to have this site exist at the rates which we were paying. In the "real world" the cost to operate this site is triple what we have been paying/charging.

We are now forced to look for another provider, or to purchase our own server and pay for our own rackspace.

No matter how we address this issue, I want to assure the membership that this will not result in an "labusa style" meltdown. The data on this site is safe, and archived daily. No one will have to reregister. No posts will be lost. We may vapourize for a day or two, but we will resurface unscathed. We will do our best to inform the membership when this is about to happen, and try our hardest to make the transition a smooth one.

As for the money issue... we are now faced with the problem of raising funds. I certainly dont want to make this site look like a certain other "las vegas strip mall" site... nor do I want to have end users pay. That is a last resort.

If anyone has any legitimate corporate business sites which need hosting, this could help us cover the costs of our server purchase if we take that route.

I'm all ears.... any BIG companies out there want to "adopt" this site? ... or better yet have a nice big server they are willing to let bandwidth "slide" on?

Just curious...

What kind of money does it take to run something like this?

The correct answer is not Green, American, Canadian, etc.

ok, i am a newbie and i know jack about web-hosting, but...

i usually go between this site and sbn (www.sportbikes.net)

and they have things there grouped where you can have your whole (corner) or whatever to yourself, there are a few clubs who have their own thingy, forum, (whatever you call it)

thats what it seems like to me

very few post there about the 12r, and it could be a great place to network, keep the logo and stuff and whatever

just an idea, if its a stupid one, i am sorry, again,i dont know anything whatsoever about how these things work

i looked but couldnt quite find what u were talking about. i saw lots of people with their own forums, but that includes the sbw logo. more importantly, they have their own ads on all pages. but MOST important, we lose all control that way; we are depending on someone else. we want to stay independat to keep the board stable. all the other boards keep shuttin down or crashin eventually, and we're tryin to avoid that. long as we have control, we can guarantee it wont be closed down. ideally we want our own server & hosting, but that may or may not be possible. its not cheap to run something like that. but we're tryin.

thanks for the suggestion tho. looks like a pretty good setup over there. big community, thats for sure. definitely a full time job keeping that place running!
