12 motor hunting up and down at idle

Aboput 7000 miles on my 2002... and all of the sudden now the 12 is hunting up and
down at idle... drops to 700 rpm and then goes up to 1200 rpm...

Pissing me off...any ideas where I should start???

Do you have a pc3?
Did you let the battery die?
If so re-map it.
Pc3's do strange things when the battery goes down.

"Which pipe?"

I think this needs a photo to get the full jist of what kind of exhaust it is.

Well, there ya go. Incorrect (insufficient) exhaust back pressure will cause a hunt at idle. To prove this to yourself, partially cover the exhaust outlet and the hunt will settle down.

238 has been running this setup for some time but apparently the problem is new.

I am going to guess that the situation is that the fueling was previously right on the edge of what would have given a hunt with the modified can, and for some reason has changed with time and gone over the edge now, running just a little leaner for whatever reason.

I had a pretty bad hunt on switching to the Brock Megaphone pipe, but going (per Brock's map) at zero throttle +14 at 1000-1500 rpm while leaving 500-750 rpm unchanged cured the hunt.

(On the possibility that the very fractional throttle settings might matter also, don't know, at 2% throttle they were +8, +24, and +18 at 1000, 1250, and 1500 rpm respectively; and at 5% throttle, +0, +23, and +5.)

Tren is right... I've run this setup almost from day one, with super crisp throttle response
and no hunting at all.... but I now have 8000 miles on the bike, with nothing but oil changes
along the way.

Gunner gave it to me bad over the phone... telling me I need to get off my ass and do
everything from valves to plugs, filters etc... hell I haven't even put on the braided brakes
lines and pads... sitting there for 6 months.

In Arizona WE RIDE YEAR ROUND... unlike you snow dogs that can work on your bikes
8 months out of the year...

I need a spare bike... like a 10, BECAUSE THE 14 SUCKS OUT LOUD!!!

8000 miles? AND you can ride year round? Jere, you got too many damn toys my friend. I'm on the way to help you out!

Didn't you post that you were getting 100 Octane at the pump awhile back? Call it a longshot, but maybe it just don't like the good stuff? My best stab at it.

I wonder if fuel pressure dropping a little, or the injectors starting to get a little clogged, are in this case accounting for going a little lean?

Not the only possible reasons though.

I put the good stuff in the Indy Car, not the bike...

Tren, it might be a possibility... do other people ever run some of that injector cleaner
through their bike???

I use the Chevron Techron cleaner very frequently, as well as run Chevron whenever I can. However that doesn't prove that not doing so tends to lead to a problem, I don't know on that.

I guess I need to get off my ass and do some fresh plugs etc... but I'm going to do some
injector cleaner...

I just have too much stuff to try to care for ... need to have a sale... I feel bad that I'm not
taking care of my shit... That's not like me, but I'm getting old... the dog still likes to
hunt but he's getting old... I'd rather sleep in, watch movies, chase pussy...

These motors do this alot in our race cars. Never can tell what causes it. BUT adjust the idle up alittle and that seems to cure it.

My guess on why the 12 is on the edge of it (and sometimes over the edge of it) is big cams.

Check the throtlle balance and TPS. It's a time for valve check and airfilter cleaning too - wouldn't You think? If You have KLEEN on maybe good to clean that one too.
