Tweaking Maps for PCIIIR

I finally got my laptop to talk to my PCIIIR by buying an IOGear USB to serial converter, digging up the right driver for XP from the web, and getting 9-10 volts to the power commander without being on the bike.

I downloaded the Muzzy race map from easyrider's site, and had some questions on what I see.

1) I tried to figure out why in 3 500 rpm bands, the 2 outer bands were richening up the fuel, and the middle band would lean it out. How do each of you figure out to make a change just on a 500 rpm band enough to swing the fuel from a rich to lean state, and back? Was this map created on a dyno, and whoever created the map was trying to reduce the power dips?

2) The timing map starts with a 3 deg. advance from 2000 up, then 4, then 5, back to 4, and settle to 0 around redline. From other discussions, I thought that you would up the timing at the bottom (<6K) and bring it back to 0 from 9K on, for some reason. I guess I don't understand the mechanics of ignitions systems to figure this out.

3) To be conservative, should I bump these timing numbers down by 2 or so, and work my way back up.

This whole fuel mapping/timing thing is way cool, but I have never done it before (car or bike), and know that I could kill my bike if I am careless with it. Any help or links to better documentation than dynojets would be greatly appreciated.

Team, If you dont want to have a map made then get yourself a Halmeter AF-30 kit that comes with the bung and sensor and weld the o2 sensor bung into the exhaust.
You can make changes to the fuel map and actually be doing it with real information.
Tuning by seat of the pants is all but impossable to do unless you are really intimate with the bike. As in spending hours a day wringing it out on the track.
Or have a map made and then fine tune the driveability with the AF-30.

I'm working on an LED TPS indicator for the zx12r so hang in there. It'll make it much easyier to make changes with the AF-30.

I wish the factory would just give us a damn closed loop system.

Thanks for the reply. The map that comes from dynojet for a bike with muzzy exhaust (Map 2, I think) would be a good starting map, correct?

I found this site, I might try to make a low profile a/f meter myself, this looks like fun

Yea starting with Dynojets map should help.

Interesting.
Thats exactly what I'm making for the TPS.

Using a single range like that for the o2 sensor isnt really that accurate. You need 3 ranges to monitor an o2 signal. The first range is for volts 0-.7 the third is .7-.85 or so and the third is for .85-1.x

The resoultion isnt good in the middle range with this unit.
The halmeter is 3 of these circuits.
