The purpose of the panels is to direct the airflow from the engine and radiator out and away.

The purpose of the whatever-you-want-to-call-thems -- fins, strakes, ribs -- I can't see as being that as I can't get why the panel would do a better job directing air away from the rider's legs with the strakes than without them.

It could be that they have a stiffening purpose, for that panel.

It is more likely I think that they are an ill-conceived styling conception, with those panels having a functional purpose but the strakes, not.

I noticed the panels too.
If you ever sat in traffic on the 12 you know how much heat you get off the engine.
It looks like only the feet get cooked now.
The fins look like a Dino upgrade waiting to happen, If they don't have a real purpose
like cleaning the air flow.

Wonder if a zx12 plastic set could be drafted onto that beast?

If you look at the 22nd pic from the bottom, the close up of the panels, it looks like the radiator cooling fan is at the begining of the panels. I wonder if its to direct hot air away from the bike or even the air boxed frame. Prevent the air flowing threw the frame from heating up. If it does it will make for one hot ride if that hot air from that radiator is coming right at your legs.
