Speaking of trees, I had what I thought was a shrub among the shrubbery in the planters right in front of my house. The yard guy was the son of the real estate outfit that I was rent/purchasing the house from, and he always cut it way back, but he was shitty overall plus way overcharged so I got rid of him. The new guy (last two years) doesn't trim it.
Anyhow, turns out it is obviously a TREE, because its top is now (only 2 years) at about the ceiling level of my second floor. Plus the trunk is about as thick as my forearm near the elbow.
Question is, since the trunk is growing only a foot away from a pillar of arches in front of the house, and only 6 feet or so from the house itself, is there a risk this tree's roots are going to damage the house? Do I have to start cutting the tree back?
Thanks!

Yes.
We have over 60 trees on our property, bulk of them about 75' and taller. We've taken out over 20 of them and it hasnt even made a dent. Any large tree (or small tree that will become large) will damage foundations or take out retaining walls if planted too close. Good rule of thumb is that the size of the root structure is equivalent to the size of the tree itself.
I have another 20 or so marked to be cut down.
Burnt a lot of wood last year.

THat's what I was afraid of. Thank you. I hate to hurt it but I guess from what you're saying, and what I feared already, I will have to start having it trimmed aggressively, sort of bonsai-ing it to stay at no more than present.
Fast growing tree, that's for sure.
Funny how trees you'd like to grow fast, don't, but the one tree that has ever potentially been a problem for me, is like one of those claims out of the seed catalogs for miracle-grow trees.

Yes, the fuggin trees. I replaced a corner of my basement foundation because some jackass put a HUGE friggin tree 7' from the corner. I hacked out a 8" diameter root more than once.

Gunner, you crack me up!!!!
How about this... I never chopped or hacked on any other man's tree, never touched
his root system, never used the "ping of death" either...
But since all trees depend on their root system, which is a process that can die due to
fatal errors, a wise man knows all roots can eventually die, and makes sure he has a
backup source... so he can restore his trees... and not lose any of his fruits of labor.
God this is soooo dumb... Fish, why didn't you pick something else???
