You Gotta see these 12's (large pics)

Crashtech sent me these, and they are FINE. What attention to detail. I feel bad for my 12 now
I left the pics HUGE so the resolution didn't get distorted.
(Crash- I think I labeled these correctly, if I didn't, let me know and I'll geth them straight)

First up is Crashtech's awesome 12

Next is Jim Wolkin's sweet ride

Then Roger Twito's 1270

And Mark Day's baby

I like the black clutch covers on the first 2 bikes. Is it paint or powder coat? It looks great!

Probably paint, that's Crash's "thing", looks sweet I wish mine was black.
Crash also smoothed and painted the frame on one of em.
Sounds like he was involved quite a bit in creating these beauties.

Thanks for posting those pics, Connman!

Actually that helps me out quite a bit, because I had been thinking of sending my stuff off to Crash to be painted, and I had thought that my CF/Kevlar fuel tank (CF where it would
be visible) would look like shit, and so was expecting to ask for the thing to just be painted black.

But, if that's the same tank and it probably is, that proves he can make them look good! Must be the difference in the clear he shoots onto it vs whatever it comes with, or some
other method of his.

(It did seem a shame to paint over the CF but till you posted that pic, that did seem the way to go.)

It's simple to do. Get yourself some VHT self priming Epoxy Paint. Part # sp-671 Satin Black.

clean the covers well with paint Prep and shoot them with about three lite coats. Let it dry for a couple of hours and bake in the oven at 200 for about 30 min. You're done!!!!! I have this done on both my 12s and it look perfect or I wouldn't have it. By the way I can get mine powdered for free and still use the paint on the covers. I do powder a lot of other stuff though.

I use a base-coat claer-coat urethane on everything. The one on Jims bike (may it rest in peace) are strait black with satin cear. The ones on mine are black metalic with satin clear to match the frame (witch can not be duplicated with a rattle can because of the metallic). Cans are ok if used properly but dont have the extra "body" because of the added solvents to thin them down to get it out of the nozzel. Some do look good though. Rog's bike has the smoothed and painted frame in gloss black.

The shit I use matches the point cover perfectly. Granted a rattle can isn't the first choice, but it's a case cover so a little perspective takes place. Powder coating was an option but it wouldn't have looked correct. You don't want to lose the texture that's cast onto the cover. Base clear would also in my opinion take away from the texture of the cover and make it appear to have been altered. I wanted it to look like Kawasaki painted it that way. Some times when you're trying to achieve that look you can get something too smooth.

Thanks Voz for the compliment on my 12.

They're not real clear on my end either. I don't know why. Although I've seen this before when large Pics have been posted. Anyone what causes this situation?

If its not a big enough job to fire up my compressor and touch up gun I use a Preval.

You get infinitely better results than you can with shake and shoot, can use the good paint/reducers/adhesion promotors/flex agents and cleanup is a piece of cake.

Its well worth the extra cost over shake and shoot. Your local auto paint supply house carries them. ;-)

I totaly understand scoot but mine is fired up every day since I paint cars for a large collision shop in Nash. We also bake everything in downdraft booths. Gunner- I am in no way trying to take anything away from your bike or your abilities. However the finish of pro paint products you have to admit is far supierior then can. There is no way it matches the ones on mine because of the metallic (which would not show up in photo's). I myself dont like powder coat either because of the clean up (you know re-tapping and scrapping) and thickness. I and all of my customers prefer the smooth pro finish over what the factory produces (which in my opinion is not that good). It is my objective as a refinish technician to reproduce a better finish then oem. . Osti- got your pm I will reply shortly, thanks.

Crash- What type of rag/polish do you clean that paint with?
I gots swirl marks, just little micro scratches.....millions of them
You can't see them from 5ft away, but if you really get right up on it, they're visible

CrashTech - I was sort of aiming that to a guy doing the stuff at home using shake and shoot (who might not know of the Preval alternative to shake and shoot).

Agreed 100% a good paint shop will do an excellent job but sometimes for small parts and/or if you don't have a friend in the business you gotta make do for yourself to keep it cost effective.

I agree and disagree with you on the powdercoating. Its not a job for the inexperienced to cleanup after (especially if the coater gets sloppy) but I have had very good results with what I've had done in the past with two different powdercoaters.

My experience is you have to be extremely clear on what gets bead blasted and what doesn't and ditto on what gets coated and what doesn't.

I just had my A1 wheels and swingarm powdercoated and they did exactly what I asked.

The tradeoff with powdercoating is many/most won't do partial coating and won't do magnesium.

The benefit is properly done its one of the toughest colored surfaces around.

I wouldn't use it for delicate or extreme precision parts (because the bead blaster is not a scalpel) but for something like rims that seem to get scratched no matter what, I like it.

Engine cases I only talked to my first (far away) powdercoater about and they fall under the magnesium rule - he won't touch them because of inconsistent (and expensive) results in the past.

It's a matter of what you like and had I not told you how I did mine you wouldn't know I will bet. Anyway I think the frame color on the 12 sux ass. Kawasaki had their head strait up their ass when they kept painting them all the same color and the gas tank the same year after year. Only a fool wouldn't know that the tank should be color keyed to the bike. I mean come on WTF. My objective was to match the point housing cover and I did that perfectly on both my 12s. Personally I'm going to paint the frame and tank on my primary bike RED!! Splash a little red into the silver and have everything else black. I hate metallics on a high performance bike or car. They just don't look like they mean business.

No Harm, No foul, at least not on my end. Rock on!!!!!!!!!

That bottom one looks like Mark Day's old 12R before he put the 7R swingarm on it. His bike had some serious motor work done on it and a bunch of other goodies too. It was a scream to ride (mostly done by me when I rode it) .

OOPS! Finally went back and read the pic titles! Not only am I slow in reading, but Mark passed me on my own "basically stock" 12R while I was ridin' his (almost impossible to pass his bike if anybody else would be riding it).

Yes red that is Marks bike after the swingarm swap and some paintwork I did to it. It is badass! That is why it was my number one pic for wicked 12's. Rog's is #2, you should have seen his head before it went back together (you know Rog.). I simply gave connman some pics of nice 12's and threw mine in for kicks (in other thread I stated that I was going to plead humble on mine and not include it). Gunner- No I really dont even give it much thought what you said on the frame color. You and everyone is and are there own person and can personalize there bike anyway they wish. But opinions are like you know. So that is yours ,I will not hold that or anything else you say against you. I come in peace not to argue. I just simply gave a pro point of view on refinishing. It is up to everyone here on there own to decide what is right for them in quality and price. As far as the tank color you got to be refering to the one on Jims (HDL) bike that is silver. Well I agree, I wanted to do the grey or satin black, but he made that call and that is what I am paid to do-what the customer wants. I am sure he will give you his imput on that when he gets back from GA. Oh and scoot I agree and have and use rattle cans on the job when they apply.,and right like I said people have to put into perspective the price and quality that they expecting. Some people do not compromise and want to pay for a perfect finish-which I guarantee. Others wish to do it on there own. That is fine as well and I take nothing from them. By the way gonna try some 014's. Heard some shit from mich. and track tech's about the fronts washing out on the pilot powers because of weak sidewalls. They dont know if bad batch or just bad all together. Never had any trouble with mine. For the record I dont have a carbon tank, those are covers that I clearcoated.
