OT, John Beckett Dead at Bonneville
John Beckett who Up until last year was president of the ECTA and head person at Maxton was in a serious accident at Bonneville when his car rolled at about 250 MPH about the 5 mile mark. One report said Crosley but the only car I know is the Honda which he also lost control of in June at Maxton. If it is, then I seriously think something was "Wrong" with the car and never corrected.
Horrible News!

Sorry to hear this news.....We do what we do and we know the cost can be high at times. Still it's painful when we have a fallen brother. Always gives me a sick feelin down deep even when I don't personally know the person.

That is exactly it, that Deep Sick feeling I have describes it perfectly, specially sine I knew and had many conversations with him, He is the first person that took me down the Maxton Mile and told me what was what. From reading more, the conditions were Horrible and some people hat 300 MPH vehicles had their wheels leaving the ground over a foot high and some were going 115 and turning out and going home. Here John was going close to 250 in these conditions!!

Hey Guys,
I talked with John as he was suiting up and stayed on the starting line until he got ready to go. Lydia and I rode down to the 2 mile mark and things looked good as he went by, he was running around 209 then. His earlier pass was 229 I think. We watched him until he was out to about 5 miles then we heard on the radio that he had crashed.
We rode down as far as we could but could not get too close. When they said over the radio that no one was to touch anything, I knew it was bad.
He apparently died before he left the salt in the ambulance.
As Vincent said, John was the first to help us out at Maxton, he was a good guy. His wreck at Maxton scared all of us there.
He will be missed and it hurt all of us here as well as his friends at home.

"I'M FREE"
DON'T GRIEVE FOR ME, FOR NOW I'M FREE
I'M FOLLOWING THE PATH GOD LAID FOR ME
I TOOK HIS HAND WHEN I HEARD HIM CALL
I TURNED MY BACK AND LEFT IT ALL.
I COULD NOT STAY ANOTHER DAY
TO LAUGH, TO LOVE, TO WORK OR PLAY
TASKS LEFT UNDONE MUST STAY THAT WAY
I FOUND THAT PEACE AT THE CLOSE OF DAY
IF MY PARTING HAS LEFT A VOID
THEN FILL IT WITH REMEMBERED JOY
A FRIENDSHIP SHARED, A LAUGH, A KISS
OH, YES, THESE THINGS I TOO, WILL MISS
BE NOT BURDENED WITH TIMES OF SORROW
I WISH YOU THE SUNSHINE OF TOMORROW
MY LIFE'S BEEN FULL, I'VE SAVORED MUCH
GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES, A LOVED ONES TOUCH
PERHAPS MY TIME SEEMED ALL TOO BRIEF
DON'T LENGTHEN IT NOW WITH UNDUE GRIEF
LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS AND SHARE WITH ME
GOD WANTED ME NOW, HE SET ME FREE

Joe Amo was pitted right next to him I guess, they were friends. I don't know how Joe pressed on, but he's still running there today. From the sounds of it John was one hell of a guy, R.I.P. I have only talked with Rory, Joe's good friend, over the phone. He did say the conditions of the track are indeed horrible, some parts soft, some hard as a rock. He said Joe had a handfull keeping the bike going. I can only imagine how bad it was if cars were leaving the ground.
