We have to do Something or else!!!

Guys and Girls we need to start complaining to our local politicians about the price of oil...

As of Friday 8-12-05 the cost of a barrel of oil finished at $67.10, A RECORD HIGH...

That is a damn disgrace...We need to COMPLAIN other wise it will keep going up and up!!!

We can do something about the cost of oil...Dont think its just the middle east setting the price of oil !!!

If nobody complains then all the politicians will continue to give the ok, for the price of oil to keep rising!!!...Just remember this, the US is making alot of money from the cost of oil and we sit here doing nothing, letting them take our $$$...DO SOMETHING!!!

By the way, it's not the fault of our current president, he and his cabinet comeup with ways to make $$$ for the US...All presidents do that...What we have to do is not let him or anyother president take advantage of us...Lets go people, DO SOMETHING to save yourself $$$...

Please dont make this a Political Debate...Thats not the intention...

CR, I'm with you. It seems that the cost of oil is getting directly pushed onto the consumer. I paid $2.65 a gallon last night before i went to the races...its crazy.

I'm not goiung political on this, i just want to say that our local newspaper blames the US/Saudi relations, a growing China, and Russia. My point is that everyone is blaming outside reasons. Last year, I cant remember the exact article, but it said that the US gas/petro oils companies earned record high profits. So i think CR is on the right path keeping this out of the political areana....oil companies are passing the loss directly to the pumps and letting us eat the losses....which by the way is in the Billions....and Billions ,more before long.

Adjusted for inflation, we aren't paying much more than our daddies did back in the late 60's when gas was 29 cents a gallon.

Seriously. ;-)

Actually we are paying considerably less, counting for inflation, than in 1980. In 2005 dollars, the price of gas was then about $3.00/gallon.

But gee, if we COMPLAIN, that will do something about China drastically increasing the demand for oil and thus creating a supply/demand crunch, and if we COMPLAIN that will no doubt result in all kinds of oil magically being produced right here in America!

(It has to be magically produced, because so many politicians and various voters refuse for there to be any new drilling in America or off our shores! But complaining will generate that magic oil!)

My fault: when the links are not active I often fail to cut and past them and open them in a new window.

(On this board for them to be "clickable" one needs to activate them manually, e.g, but without the spaces:
[ url]http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2005/04/gasoline_prices.html[ /url] which, if not for the spaces, would have activated the link.)

Good link!

I don't think it's the cost of fuel per se that's causing so much grief as much as the difference between what we've all been used to paying -vs- what it is now -- added to the higher prices of virtually everything else. It makes it seem so much worse.

Housing, utilities, food, clothes, taxes, consume a greater portion of our - at least my - take home pay than in '80. The high cost of fuel is just one more increase I'd rather not see. I'd be much more comfortable spending that money on cigars and bourbon and I wouldn't be nearly as whiny about it...

YMMV

It's also not as if the situation was good in 1980.

In fact the energy prices were pretty damaging to the economy around that time.

It's remarkable really that we've been having an economic expansion presently even in the face of these sharply rising costs (as you point out, relative to what we've been paying recently, though not in terms of rising above or even matching previous highs.)

What kills me is that the people who regulate the price here in the US, tell the press that next year the price per barrel will be around $60.00...They were 100% correct in their guesstimation on the cost per barrel...So, I am waiting on the next guesstimation for the summer of 2006, then we can be sure that's what the cost will be!!!

Bergie, your right about the 24oz. water being $1.50...Thats because nobody is complaining about the cost of bottled water...

Hey CR, long time no talk to. If you think gas is bad take a look at diesel. I'm paying just under the price of premium for diesel right now, can't even imagine what it will be once the heating season arrives.

Guess they have us by the short hairs, it's not like I plan on buying a treehugging hybrid.

Its simple really.
If an oil company, in lets say china, offers $70 a barrel to country Y, and if oil company Z in the USA wants to buy that same barrel then they have to make a competitive bid on it. Its just that simple. Demand is higher than supply.

No one that drives a big V8 engine (like me) has any right to complain about gas prices. Those are the vehicles that are driving up demand for gasoline.
If you drive a small car that gets good mileage then you have every right to bitch about the big v8 guzzlers. If people didnt want to buy big SUV V8 cars and trucks and they sat on the lots unsold, then they wouldnt make as many. (this is starting to happen now)
The factories are going to make what they think people are going to want to buy.
In the mid 1970's 4 cylinder cars started to do well and flood the market. Remember the pinto, vega, etc. That trend caught chrysler off guard in the mid 70's and almost put chrysler out of buisness untill someone with some forsight took over chrysler.
Well we are at about 1974 right now. pinto, vega came out in 1971. Hybrids have been out for several years.
Also the refineries are flat out producing gasoline. If they could increase production they allready have. Gasoline production is maxed here in the usa. One company in texas (valaro maybe?) even found a way to use the sour crude and get good yields. Sour crude is very cheep but very expensive to refine. they are paying about 1/3 the price for the sour crude and the refining cost is 50%higher. They had the forsight to switch over the plant several years ago. They are making a ton, and i mean a ton, of money. But they took a multi billion dollar gamble. And sence gasoline demand was predicted several years ago to peak about 2005-2008 and then steadily decline for the next 50 years, no oil company in thier right mind would build a new large scale refinery never being able to recoup the cost of building it. So, they upgraded thier plants and tweaked them, and squose every last drop out of them. Diesel fuel is high because they are making more gasoline than diesel per barrel of oil because gasoline emand is many many times more.

If you look around you can read a ton of information on this topic. Its been a hot story for a few years now.

Somthing interesting... the auto manufacturers assn. has several publications that arnt from any one single maker but represents the industry as a whole. They had an article about 2 years ago. They did a large study on gas prices around the country and broke it down into regions of the country. The purpose was to try and determine at what price per gallon people in the different areas would actually start making buying decisions based on fuel economy and anual fuel costs. AS you would expect, it did vary from one part of the country to the other but the average was $3.10 a gallon. With the north east highest at $3.30.
So the industry looked at this study and tried to predict about what month of what year a gallon of gas would hit $3.10 a gallon based on predicted demand and supply. It was figured for july 07 back in may of 03. Well the chinese are starting to buy cars now in large numbers, so that sped things up. we may see $3.10 in july 06, a full year earlier.

It also just so happens that at $3.10 a gallon the cost of a gallon of gas when adjusted for inflation will be just about what it cost in 1980-81for a gallon of gas.
Funny how things work.
The good news is that gas prices will start to fall and then level off after demand peaks in 2007-2008. So fueling your old muscle car that gets 10 mpg, will still be afordable to drive in 10-20 years.
See, theres always a bright side.

It is funny with inflation increases, the salary increases for 80% of Americans has not hardly changed since 1980.... That makes EVERYTHING much more expensive.

I personally don't believe in the gas shortage anymore than there was an energy shortage in CA 3 years ago...(remember "rolling blackouts", so soon we forget) that was all a big LIE in the name of money and power. China is not using more oil than they were last year!!! We invade Iraq, take over the oil lines, and the gas prices goes up. HAHAHA This is a big joke! This is why France, Germany and Russia was so against our invasion as they had oil contracts. This is NOT ABOUT TERRORISM!!! That is the excuse, to get us to support Haliburtan and selfish aggendas. Someone please find the plane that hit the pentagon. The trade center per towers held approx 50,000 workers each per day. Why only 3,500 deaths??? That would be 96,000 people evacuated in about 10minutes....??? Both building fell STRAIGHT down...(a tremendous job) Drilling in Alaska or anywhere is not going to lower prices period. The natural gas company here is CONSTANTLY raising prices and ALL our furnances are more efficient. It is simply about the current climate in our administration that PROFITS from energy company profits.

Besides, does it really make any sense that rotting dinosaurs is where oil comes from??? If so, then why doesn't it mix with water?!?!
