rebuilding suspension
I was just sitting here at work reading a mag about suspension setup.Their contention is to have the shocks and forks rebuilt after every 15,000 miles or you are wasting your time with setup.I don't remember hearing any comments about this in any threads. At what point did you have your suspension rebuilt?

I just did the ZRX front end rebuild/revalved, & had the Ohlins shocks "checked" at "Aftershocks." Owner Phil (call & ask questions) is a great guy, & runs a cool outfit. He said my Ohlins shocks (5 years old) were ok, so no charge. I had a leaky fork seal, & wanted it revalved for my weight, & wow is it mucho better than it was. I can actually ride freeway now (had it set way too stiff for backroads/goat trails.) I'm VERY happy w/the result. Turn-around is about a week, pricing on the website. :

Another great shop I've had things done at, & they been around 20+ years.
Lindermann Suspension

Back in my racing days (70's/60's) I had Jim do several sets of shocks for me for different roadrace bikes, & he always did a good job. My GPZ1100 had THE prototype "twin-clicker" (he was w/Fox then) on it. He's been around forever, & does factory Honda & Kawasaki racing stuff.
However these days he gets stuff sent in from all over the world, & is quite busy/longer turnaround, & more expensive. He can do just about ANYTHING including gold/black/etc. color nitriding, revalve, respring, etc. just like Aftershocks. If you want high tech, Lindermann (who's also a dealer for Penske, Ohlins, Works, Fox, etc.), or the lower cost route is Aftershocks.
That's what we do out here on the Left Coast. Check out the websites; hope this helps...

Its a nice place to look into but I'ld still like to hear how often riders have their suspension checked.

With 36k miles on my stock suspension, should I do something or is my suspension still good?

I would say a lot has to do with type of abuse and type of riding. I have 15000 on my 02 and I will be looking at suspension this winter.
I think this is a very good question. One that I have wondered about. The forks I plan on changing fluid and inspecting and possible revalve job. The rear shock is questionable from the start. I believe I will toss my rear shock for an Olins.

Of course, the fork oil should be changed by the 15K mark. It would be best to have the rear shock recharged. When I was doing my swingarm swap, I recharged the OEM shock. When we hooked it up to the nitrogen tank, the shock showed about 60 psi. If I remember correctly, that's about 100 psi BELOW factory specs.

I'd change (and I do) the forkoils every year. Well if You ride less than 4k miles, You could go 2 years, but changing the fork oil cost You like 10-20$ depending on the oil You put in. And it really makes difference expecially if Your oil has had the same oil 4 Years. On the shock I got it rebuilded (new oils and recharged nitrogen) after 4 Years and 35k miles and could tell the differense. I's say rebuild fork every Year and shock every 2-3 years.

I asked Phil @ Aftershocks, & Jim @ Lindermann-Suspension, & they both said the same exact thing:
Aftermarket shock for the rear (Penske, Ohlins, etc.) Both admitted the shock "could be rebuilt" - Jim added he's done several ZX12R shocks, & could make the compression dampining adjuster on the shock "really work like it should, but it never will be as good as a Penske or Ohlins replacement."
They both pushed respring/revalve of the forks, especially for someone as big as me. Phil at Aftershocks also suggested if I liked what he did with my ZRX forks, he could do the same for the Ninja forks. (ZRX has RT Gold Valves, which he resprung/revalved the forks to work in conjunction w/the Gold Valves {different valving from stock forks.} I was apparently the ZRX "guinea-pig" for that mod.) I am very happy w/the result.
He also suggested a mod for one of the Axle nuts which I was skeptical about, as apparently ZX10R riders were having trouble w/this. He removes the "shoulder" on one of the nuts, so when tightened down, they will not "pinch-in" the fork lowers. He said numerous ZX10 riders were having trouble with stiction; & this cured it. He suggesting ALL KAW's with this type of axle-nut should have this done. Said not to worry, the pinch bolts will hold this in place, & he added he's doing this for a lot of EX500 racers as well (he races an EX in the AFM in CA.)
Hmmm, someone may want to relate that to the ZX10R forum?
I left my "nuts" (no puns here fellas) stock as is...
FWIW, IMHO

Of course Penske or Öhlins is better but getting shock rebuilded costs about 50$ and Öhlins 500$. Still saving on one... But even for that 50$ Yuo get what You paid for and can notice the difference when it is serviced. Same goes to front..
