erratic idle

After just putting the engine back together, she'll run normal for about 5 seconds and then start to race up to 3000rpm's.I tried adjusting the idle thumb screw and the idle will come down and then just stall.I double checked the throttle bodies and they're all seated fully.I checked the hoses and plugs.Any tips on where to look from here?On my test ride, the idle would be ok but race with the least bit of throttle. If I blip the throttle she'll go back to normal.Any thoughts?

Ya know I'm going to have to check, new chain is on order and hopefully solve the problem. When I took it apart this time I made sure I painted next to the tooth and on the bar of the chain to line it back up,it maybe 180.

What about the TPS plug?? Did you plug the right one in?? The map sensor and TPS have the same plug and you can get them wrong. Black one to the TPS and the grey one to the sensor.

new chain on order, hopefully will come in Thursday.I took the old chain out today and noticed the marks were nowhere near where I aligned them the first time. The first time I had everything all plugged in,I actually had the plugs reversed, good thing I double checked everything before turning on the power.

If you are saying you marked the chain to the cam timing marks and now they don't line up after rotating the crank - they won't.

I once tried to figure out how many crank revs it would take to get the chain to line back up and gave up after like 8.

I'm too lazy to do the math on the number of cam teeth vs. chain links so it remains a mystery to this day. 8-o

I agree with Johnny, you are off 1 tooth. ;-)

I got the new chain and it's kicking my ass.I'm having a hard time getting the intake cam in because of chain lenght.I double checked the part # but it's still too tight to get the cam in the galley.Tensioner is backed out all the way. What am I doing wrong?

it can be tricky if ou have adjustable sprockets especially if not installed correctly.
the teeth count between the top edge of the head should not change.

The reason I ask is because my APE sprockets have TWO sets of timing dots.

One set is correct

I advanced the sprocket(exh) one tooth and the cams slipped right in this time.I don't remember having all that torque down low.It must be because I haven't ridden in awhile.Throttle is highly touchy and needs to be adjusted.Idles great now but will shut off if I blip the throttle.

Congrads on getting it fixed.
When idle hangs it's lean, when it drop too low it rich.
lean it out a little and try it.
Best i remember.

This thing is still idling funny and sounds weird when I let off the throttle almost like it's missing a cylinder.Another learning curve here.Do to my impatience in taking the cam cap off several times, I used an air rachet to put it back on and snapped some bolts.I'm going to replace all 18 bolts, would you use stock bolts or ones from a hardware store? With the idle, the problem is it's doing both, hangs up until I blip the throttle and then it dies.

Never, ever use hardware store bolts. Ever.

Its okay to use an air ratchet to screw the cap bolts down (makes life a lot easier in the tight confines), but man get your air torque setting down as low as it will go. The final snugging and torqueing should all be done by hand. You only want to use the air ratchet to lightly seat the cap bolts - no more.

Edit - also, I still think your timing is off from what you are describing.

I ordered 18 stock bolts @ 3.75 each Ron Ayers has em for 1.80 but they take so freakin long and then have to pay shipping.I'll have the new ones on Monday.Their mechanic said I could use at least a grade 8 or 10 bolt if I wanted but to just use something strong due to the valve spring pressure.I'm bringing the bike in and have the cams redegreed with the new chain. As much as I like working on the bike the desire to ride is overcoming the need to fix it myself.A man's got to know his limitations.I had some excitement trying to locate a round rubber gasket that goes on the valve cover. The thing popped off while taking the bolt out and was nowhere to be found.Ten minutes with a mirror and I scored 3 points for the ringer around the spark plug.I used an o-ring pick to get it out which was no easy task.
