cam chain tension
I finally was able to start 'er up today but the cam chain was making a racket.I have an A.P.E. manual chain adjuster so my question is how do I know if the adjuster is too loose or too tight? When installing the cams back in,they were able to slide a total of 1/2 inch back and forth in the head.Would that cause the chain to bind and make noises if it wasn't centered ?

ummm a half inch lengthwise?!?
*something* is wrong, bigtime.
.1inches of endplay is pretty lose, i can't imagine .5 inches...
sounds like they sent you a cam for the wrong engine....

They're my stock cams.I can't say I measured the play, and maybe there is a piece on the top cap,but they slid back and forth a good amount.

There is an article at the APE website about the manual cam tensioner. I tried it and have choosen to go back with the OEM auto tensioner. The reason is that the OEM tensioner keeps CONSTANT pressure on the cam chain vs manual never adjusting to conditions. It was a good idea for the busa until they improved the tensioner.

Am I missing something here or is this a Joke?
Cam Chains Should have No play in them. They are not like drive chains where they must go through an Arc of different lengths. i have a manual tensioner and turn the crank clock wises and with my fingers turn in the adjustor until I feel resistance and then lock it in place. you can then turn the crank either way and the cams move!

what it sounds like is that he has a significant amount of endplay, not chain slop. this is based on the comment asking if the cam chain wasn't centered on the cam if it would cause noise.
i could be wrong though.
if there is a lot of endplay, then i could see itm akinglots of noise.

I sort of thought that also, but the Groove that fits the RIng on the Cams has very little give to it unless somehow he missed this locating part?

Yes,I was talking about the end play so far as the movement was concerned.I would think that the tightness of the chain would center it out after several rotations.I think as far as adjusting the cam chain tensioner,I haven't been able to feel when there is resistance.Stupid me,I'm thinking that it's the o-ring causing the friction, well duh, pull the o-ring back some.In my other post,I was having problems with erratic idle,JC said it was the cam timing and without mentioning that,Freddie Klies said he thought the chain was stretched giving it variable timing.Looks like new chain needs to be in the works and hopefully solve both problems.

sounds like you need to fix whatever is causing that endplay first, THEN worry about the other things.
i am sure there is a spec for the endplay, check the inspection/repair section of your service manual in the engine chapter.

Do you have adjustable sprockets? Check the bolts for tightness. Also did you have your cam tensioner installed before you degreed your cams? Without it, it will have more endplay as you say.
Is this play caused by you reversing the directions that the motor is rotating? If so, then please observe that the cam chain itself has enough gappage in the link openings to give you some play. Just like your bike chain. You may NOT have a problem with the cam chain.
Your timing does sound off though. It may be 180 off on the exhaust?
