Current used prices on ZX12s?

I really like the 02 ZX12R, but when I went to the dealer, they gave me the song and dance about how their offer was the best they could do, because they wouldn't be able to sell my bike due to their 3 01 leftovers...

Their deal was 7500 trade for my red 00 ZX12R (5300 miles), and I would have to pay MSRP. I know their cost to sell is 9450, and their hold-over is 5%. If they sold mine for what they are giving me, they still make 2500 profit. I tried to go half on that and they would not budge. They said they would be lucky to get 6K for a used ZX12...

So I guess I will sell mine privately, and then go in and go deal with them on just the purchase, making up the difference that way. What are the current market value for these bikes, I have not seen too many used for sale.

Info: stock bike, 5300 miles, smoked windshield, headlight covers, IMMACULATE (in fact, my bike is in better shape than the 02 that they had on the floor, cosmetically. No scratches, etc.) I would also throw in the remaining 2 or 3 years worth of extended warranty.

If you have seen prices for red 00, low to average miles, can you post them here please?

Stay away from the Herb Tarlick looking guy...

First thing Team, is to get to another dealer. Second, it is almost always better to sell your bike outright. Prices for 12's out of the most recent N.A.D.A and Kelley Blue Book are as follows:

N.A.D.A. Clean trade-in wholesale: $6,510.00
Average retail: $8,240.00

K.B.B. Wholesale: $7,200.00
Suggested Retail: $9,505.00

Here is something to remember. One of these books are used to buy vehicles, the other to sell them. Obviously, anybody would ask or pay ten grand for a 2000 ZX-12R is brain dead.

The dealer is entitled to make a profit. I can also see his reasoning on not wanting to sit on stale product, but that should be an incentive to move the 2002 ZX-12R. Nobody knows how the new 12 will sell, since the old one was such a dust collector. Hold back only exists for a limited time, It would only be on the 2002 model.

I hope this helps.

PRICES...00 ZX-12R

Well what I saw a month ago when I was looking ranged from
8500 to 9995 for USED bikes. Most were perfect like yours seems to be , but when I could buy a NEW 00 for 9000+ttl
and 4 yr warranty, thats the way I went... maybe this helps?

Thanks...

Thanks for the replies. I would never pay 11K for the bike, which is the MSRP for the 2002. But this is what they are asking me to do if they give me 7500.

I think I will get some pictures of mine and try to sell it for about 8K and see if I get any interest. I would expect that the dealer would put about this price on it. Realistically, I will probably end up selling it privately for what they offered as trade. Then I would go in and offer only about 9700 for the 2002, at zero risk to the dealer since we are only dealing with a ordered bike.

They are selling theirs as soon as they get them, so I would have to order the bike. This means that they do not need the year-end holdback Kawasaki gives them for the 2002 models they sell in 2002.

FYI on the 2002 dealer numbers, if you are interested... These are from memory from the dealer invoice I ran, they may be off, but not by much at all.

Dealer Invoice: -9464
Kawasaki Freight: -100
Kawasaki Prep Credit: +85
Dealer Ready to Sell Price: -9449
Holdback (paid end of year): 5% of MSRP (+549.95)

I love it when dealers charge prep, when Kawasaki pays the dealer to prep the bike. Also when they charge 2-3 times as much for the freight.

Sometimes I just don't understand what goes through people's minds! There are some changes made on the '02 - but definitely nothing to make it significantly better than the '00. And to pay a bunch of money to get an '02 when you already have an '00 that is in perfect condition doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me - especially when you consider that the '00 models will be the ones that are worth the most a few years down the road.

If you must have an '02 why not just keep the '00 and get the '02 also? Then you can really smile a little later down the road when your '00 that the dealers could barely give away is worth more than your '02!!

Rocket (cool name), do you really think that the 00 will be worth the most? I think back to the ZX-11. The original models like the "C" are not worth anywhere near what the "D" models are worth.

The Japanese collector bike market includes the CBX and um...well I'm sure there is something else.

Ricky Gadson says that the 02 is much better, but then again, he is paid to say that.

Ok....

TS,
You'll definitely come out better by selling your'00 and then trying to work up a cash deal. If it is as clean as you say it is you shouldn't have much of a problem selling it. Dealers don't want to pay much for '00s & '01s because they are considered "cold" bikes. Meaning, they don't sell worth a crap, and the general motorcycling community view them as pieces of shit. I had a wonderful experience at the Suzuki dealership yesterday with a punk kid. He should write a book because it was obvious to me in his mind he's a fucking genius. He was dogging the 12 to no end, it got a little ugly after he made the issue personal. Anyway my point is the older 12s will NEVER be hot sellers, and to be honest I don't know if the '02 will fair much better.

Also for what it's worth, before I got took to the cleaners I'd look at the bike you've got right now and make sure that it's worth losing money to get the '02. Because you will lose money. I personally like the '02, but not enough to lose my ass on my bike which has had gobs of $$$$$ thrown at it to make it what it is today. I wish you luck on whatever route you choose.

Keep it...

...I personally (and hope) that the 00' 12Rs will be one of THE collector bikes from and of this time...but how much will clean unmolested 12Rs be worth ten-twenty years from now?...who knows?...how much are clean unmolested Z-1s worth?...there a few notable 'firsts' on the 12Rs, not to mention the 'unrestricted' nature of it and the 220MPH speedo...the last of the PRODUCTION bikes truely capable of reaching 200MPH literally 'off the showroom floor'...this and the 00' Busa made devastating history and probably changed the course of ultra hi-speed-mega-horsepowered production sportbikes forever...every production bike from now on will be regulated to less than 186MPH and relegated to 'second place', so to speak...important history if history is important to you...okay, which one of you sold your Chevelle SS454 LS6 or some similar beast during the 'gas shortage' of the 70s'?...DOH!

I did. Bought a 440 Cuda that killed it. The Hemi would of been just too cruel.

Truthfully, and we are living this history as it is being written, probably only the Hayabusa (99-00) will be remembered as the ultimate bike.

Can't predict what the future will bring (wish I could!), but I'll bet the '00 ZX-12R will be the most desirable of the lot in later years. Like was said above, it is the only year that is "unrestricted", has the 220 mph speedo, was available in candy persimmon red, etc.... Of course, it would have to be a clean, low mileage unit and 100% factory stock to be worth the most $$$. I'll be hanging on to mine to find out if I'm right!!

And remember - Gadson supposedly ran a 9.50 second 1/4 on a stock '00 12R (before it was officially released) and then backed it up with something like a 9.47 with Muzzy's exhaust installed. [At least that's what the magazines were reporting in late '99 and early '00.] So, to me the times he reported on the new '02 just fall in line with what an '00 will do.

We'll learn more about the changes as more of the new ones start showing up at local rides and meets.
