I'm right at 35k, and this is the start of the third season of riding my 12. Goal is to hit 50k by the end of this riding season. I still have 3 years left on my warranty hehe...

We got bored at the office, so I took a set of ebay gauges and fired them up!

We had a couple questions:
Could we simulate speed on the bench? Answer YES
If so, how fast can the gauge cluster go i.e. at what speed would the gauge cluster stop accepting input? Answer 360 MPH
Would it roll over to zero at 99,999? Answer NO, there is a 6th digit!
And now we have another question, the 6th digit appears to only be capable of displaying a "1", so will it reset to zero at 199,999? Answer: We'll find out in a couple days.

so when the waveform indicates a speed > 360mph, what happens?

Don't remember where it was but probably in the manual it says that the biggest number it accepts is 199999 km. Probably same in miles as You're allready over that mark. But question: what was the frequency when the speedo showed 360MPH? So what would be the "real" speed when speedo is showing that?

Yes Frequency generator, square wave +/- 5V, as defined in the manual.
The gauge just stops responding around 15MHz. I don't think it damaged anything, but the speedo indicator drops to zero.
7MHz is 280 MPH and that is where I leave it most of the time on the bench. If you look closely at the pics you will see the speedo gauge is topped out. It can't hurt it since it's just an electric signal, nothing to go out of calibration.
We calculate actual speed by distance on the odometer not the speedometer.

Looks like I rode another 6000+ miles over night
Once this test is complete we'll crack this set of gauges open and see if we can't figure out how to "program" it directly and instantly to any numerical value we want.
Right now our question is, will it reset to zero with a "0" or six "000000", or will it stick at 199,999? Maybe it will just display EEEEEE, who knows.
UberGeeks want to know.

If its done right it "burns" rom when calculating odo, so it should just stic in the 199999. But if it is reprogrammable - like eeprom - it can come back to 0. I doubt it, because I think that I read somewhere that You have to get a new cluster if it "wores out". But I'm interested to see what happens because my own is allready at the 85k km mark...

The gauges DO NOT ROLL OVER, they remain 199,999.

The trip odometer functions continue to operate as normal but the odometer TOPS OUT AT 199,999 and stays there permanently.

Now that we not the odometer will not roll over, we will dive into finding out how to reset it.
