quote: I had mine apart 5-6 times in the last year. I just can't get it to stop dragging/making it hard to shift at times (especially into 1st from a stop- ker-crunch! = loud!) It seems to be stack related? 11 frictions & 10 steels, & I keep trying changing sizes of the steels/varying the stack height- yet can't seem to find the "sweet spot."
Even tried (current install) back to back steels per somes suggestions, yet still I have the same problem. It FEELS like it is dragging very slightly, causing this poor shifting. Bike only has about 8K miles on it so I don't think it's gear dogs or shift fork related. .
I really don't do many burnouts/wheelies to speak of (a few, but not that often- most wheelies are power wheelies), & only been ot the drags once (4 runs/1 night) several years ago. It has the Muzzy clutch kit & billet basket installed. I would be at the drags if I could figure this out...
I'm really tiring of pulling the body work, clutch/cover/gasket trying to find the problem. It's getting really really old- especially on a low-mile machine. One of the numerous reasons I don't ride it much...
Any suggestions?
So You mean going from N to 1st? It will always clunk if You put the gear on immedeatily after pressing the clutch. The transmission is still turning. Wait something like 5 second and it won't clunk anymore because it isn't turning so fast. Don't wait too long because it is stops You won't be able to change the gear.

00' early model (#8488) w/~8K miles. Rarely ridden; mostly stock.
Has Muzzy basket & clutch kit (hub, springs, etc.)
The KAW "clunk" is expected (riding KAW's since 72' H1500), so that's not a big deal. It's just that it INCREASED in severity/dramatically after the clutch/basket install. It also is clunky when I shift using the clutch at speed in the higher geas. UPSHIFTS without the clutch are smooth as silk, leading me to firmly believe it IS the clutch pack that's the problem. The spring plates (back of basket) are removed per instructions.
Again, the bike shifts fine, but the clutch drags constantly. The only things I haven't changed out yet is the pusher bearing, the cover "rod" (that attaches to the cable which shows a little wear, but not very much), & the basket bearing. I'm tempted to change those out & see what happens.
Suggestions?
