Rear tire wear- how far can you really go?
Long time no post, been off at work for a while....
I am on a long road trip with the 12 and have a dilemma. The rear tire is showing the grooves/cords in the center after ending today's ride. I knew the tire was getting near the end, but at the end of today I noticed the grooving on the back. I am stuck out in Grand Junction, CO about 300 miles from home. How much more life do you think the tire has? I know it needs to get changed, but I am not sure what my options are here and I would rather not lose another day (have to head back to work real soon). Chance it or stop and replace it? Obviously I am going to be stuck with whatever the local dealership has here. I would just like to run it but wouldn't want it to let go coming though one of the mountain passes.

ive run with cords showing before....not the smartest thing in the world...just dont beat on it or run at any sort of high speed and itll survive home id think.
Call your insurance and make sure you have roadside assistance coverage on your bike just in case (lots of ins companies dont put this feature on a normal bike policy)

I once went 120 miles with cords showing...you can go farther than that, but you just have to go slow. I cannot stress that enough! If you dont mind going slow, it'll make it.
Going 35mph, you will make it that last 300 miles left.

I go to the wearbars or maybe slightly past that & change them...
Figure if I don't, I'm more likely to get a flat...

buy a new tire or rent a pickup truck or u-haul and trailer your bike back home.

I'm more worried about getting stuck out in the boonies by myself than anything. No truck, no trailer, nobody to come get me....

Just a quick hit on the net show at least 10 places in Grand Junction to get a new tire.
Something tells me you already know the answer to this question.
It is physically impossible to travel 300 miles at a speed that is safe enough for you to get home.

i think yer ok dude . if its a dunlop it has 4 layers of cord. after you see the second then start worrying. if its a michelin your fucked. one layer then it pops. if its shinko them bastards go on the cord forever, same with pirelli but there steel belt.

Well, looked around Grand Junction today, and all I could find was Dunlop tires in 180 size. One guy said he would cut me a deal on a D207 that he has had around for a while , $145. Didn't seem like too good of a deal for that old of a tire. This is Harley and dirtbike country here. If I was on a HD I could get anything I wanted, but sportbikes, it is pretty limited from my shopping around here. I set up an appt. to get a Dunlop put on on the rear (180 size). I am running Sportec M1s. Guess I'll live with the Dunlop until I get home and get another set of tires once I am there.

yeah, not a fantastic deal by any interpretation, but it will work fine. alot of people (myself included) run 180s on their 12s

When I was "young-rrr" I would never replace a tire (REAR) until I saw cords...
I have seen more than 1-layer of cords showing in my day...
...(young and stooo-ped days)...
