The best thing for doing shims is a digital mike. Next best is good quality digital caliper, next after that a dial caliper. Using a vernier anything will make you crazy, but by the time you're done you'll be pretty good at using a tool no longer in general use..........

I agree with Doug. A micrometer is the best tool for measuring shims. They come in several sizes. I have a 0-1/2", 0-1", 1-2", 2-3" 3-4", and a 4-5". They are great tools to have if you spend a lot of time inside engines.
The biggest downfall is that good one's aren't cheap...

I ended up buying the Mitutoyo mit-500-196 $89.00. I saw alot of cheap ones on e-bay but I didn't want to chance the quality.

I got my Digital Vernier from Harbor Freight for about $20.00 On Sale. Nice to go from MM to Inches when adjusting Valves. You must be careful and reset them from time to time as apposed to using the Micrometer with the end that puts the proper tension on the Part being measured.

Any mititoyo is going to do the trick well. At the tolerances you're talking about digital is fine and much quicker to use. Even the $20 cheap-o brand is good for the track toolbox, I picked a decent one up off eBay as well.

Doctor Hill, you err.
No such thing as a "digital vernier". The term is mutually exclusive. A "vernier" scale refers to the small graduated lines used to further define the larger measurement indicated by the numbered graduations on a scale. The digital method eliminates the need for the vernier.
Ain't this fun?
