Anyone using an Odyssey battery?

If the following is close to true; it could solve my stroker's hot starting problem. Anyone tried an Odyssey battery on their 12?

Odyssey is the best battery you can buy, offering the most cranking power available of any battery its size, a whooping 545 amps for 5 seconds when full charged.

I have used Odyssey batteries in the past. They pack a lot of power into a little space and are AGM, so there is no acid to deal with.....

Basically they are the shit!!! Is there an application available to fit the 12R??

I was hoping someone could tell us if and which application would work.....

It appears that Odyssey doesn't make one to fit the 12R. I have actuall not found a battery that is much better for the 12R (based on specs) than the OEM....other than Interstate. The specs are the same, but it is sealed and maintenance free.

For some reason the CCA on those batteries are much higher than what they say. It's one of those deals in life that's actually better than advertised. A good friend of mine has a freekin huge battery wholesale center. He has everything made in stock and these Deka motorcycle batteries are the best thing he says he's ever seen. Although I do know he can get Odyssey brand I didn't ask him between those two. I will ask tomorrow and post back what he says. My biggest thing was getting away from the acid. The extra power was just a freebie!

the biggest/most powerful battery i could get into the stock battery slot (needed tray mods) was a FBG gel, but it didn't cure my hot starting. I then went to a 15# Odessey bat (680CCA???) mounted in between the arms (10" ext). It didn't cure the hot starting woes. Bigger cables, new starter, retarded adv at 0-1500rpm, nope none of it cured the starting prob.

24v starting circuit absolutely cured the hot start probs. Once you do that you'll wonder why you waited so long to do it.

Go Interstate!
and the Oddesey battery your talking about is the PC545. it will fit, that is what Karl used in his it is the FBG Gel.... battery Same thing different label. I have not heard much about the Deka brand? but I will investigate it today. Karl is really correct, you almost always need a dual battery system for the bigger bikes. what are your cams degreed to also? that will make a difference!

I would still go with the Interstate! and set up a small battery inline to get you over the hump! let me know and I might be able to make a phone call and get you a discount....

Sounds like I'll have to bite the bullet and install a 24v solution. Seems like I read a post awhile back where someone actually used the starter relay so the extra battery was just part of the 12 v system until he pushed the started button. Then is became a 24v circuit to the starter motor. Anyone remember how that works, and where is a good place to mount the second battery ?

Thanks,

Mega, yes you hook into the starter relay. However, it does not actually join the system. I could not figure out how to get the 2nd batt to join the system without the whole system becoming 24V?!?! You have to charge the 2nd battery independant at night. No problem as you only use it to HELP during starting.

Procedure: Run two wires from the second batt to the battery box. Directly Ground the NEG wire to the same ground as the motor. Connect the POS Before the relay switch so it is only active when the starter button is pushed. This is not the same as the POS connect for the bike systems. You will love your starting power!!! I have also been using the FBG. I actually made some mods to the connections just for neatness and safety, so that everythings connects like OEM. I used #10 wire from Home Depot. You have to mod your batt box also to get the FBG to fix in the box. It is mainly moving some thing around. Also, I modded the jumper wire so that it is ALWAYS accessable for easy charging or jumping. No more drama with starter my "little" motor. PS All of my wires still connect UNDER the OEM black plastic cover on the batt box.

OK here's the poop on the Deka. I had my buddy pull one off the shelf today and load check it. It checked 370CCA! Almost twice what the manufacture say's it will. Like I said before this is one of those rare time when you actually get more than you pay for.

Would this work?
- From the extra battery use 10 - 12 gauge wires to connect the + & - posts on both batteries.
- Wire the new battery as you described.
- Install a relay on the starter solenoid that breaks the + & - connections between the 2 batteries
when the starter button is activated.

Just an FYI, almost any motorcycle battery will pull that type CCA on a Carbon Pile Load tester for a short time. That is not a true rating of CCA that is just a load applied.
CCA by defination, it is the amount of current that a battery can hold for 30 seconds at 0 deg's. and not go under 10.5V (or what ever the mfg rates shutoff volts at)
couple of questions, for you buddy gunner, at that load how long did it last? and how long did it stay above 10.5 volts? It would be interesting for sure to do a side by side compairson of a bunch of the brands.

I will ask about how long it will hold, or go over and check it myself. The best thing to me about the deka is the fact that it's a Glass Matt. We all know what acid will do when it gets spilled. One other thing he did say that he had Odyssey and they were nice batteries, but very high priced, but unless they had changed their policy they have a three year free replacement. He tells me that's unheard of for a motorcycle battery. I think that all their batteries have the same replacement policy. Still the price was vary high. The Deka is reasonably priced a very high quality. Not that it means anything but they are OE in a damn Harley.
