1270 vs 1290
Hey Guys,
Anyone running the JE 1290 kit? What's the downside to the 1290 vs 1270? I've heard that Kaw thinks the walls are too thin on the 1290 and that's why they recommend the 1270. Any input is appreciated before I make my final decision. What the HP difference between the two?
Thanks,

The down side to the 1290 is you can't rebore if you hurt a wall. Cost for 1290 pistons are higher than a 1270. Less head gasket space on a 1290.
Up side a little more HP and TQ. You can get the 1290 kit ready to exchange from APE for 909.00. Bigger than a 1270.

Thanks Bossman,
I think I will play it safe and go with the 1270.

Post your numbers if you have dyno'd either.

If you build it correctly, yes. This rule holds true regardless, 1270 or 1290. If you're going to do it, go 1290. There is no proof that 1270 is more reliable than 1290. If you're going to spray it, go with whatever is less expensive, and use the extra money to buy higher quality nitrous application pistons.

Do you not think the JE 1290 piston are good for nitrous? what about the wiseco 1272.
Who do you recommend for the nitrous pistons?

My 1270 on the stingy dj150 dyno made 181.6 ponies and 101.3 for torque. Muzzy pipe, filters, some generic map..

Thanks for the input guys.
Maybe Doug...if he's still around can chime in on why Muzzy chose the 1270 rather than the 1290 kit?
More horsepower with the 1290 but I think the walls are thinner and I know of a couple of 1290 kits that have blown up but I haven't heard the same with the 1270 kits.
I realize any motor can blow for a variety of reasons. Eventually I hope to spray 100 - 120 shot of nitrous.
Thanks,

I've made over 190 on 1270s with just minor head clean-up (not even a valve job on one of them)...
MTC (Tony) recomends against spraying the 1290 because of wall thickness...but I'm sure it will work if tuned right...just dont't think it would be "as-good/safe" as with thicker walls...
The 1260 that I built for my best friend John made 200.8Hp and 106.9Lb...
It's NOT "all about CCs"
We WILL be Spraying Johns 1260 with 70-80 progressive-dry in a few weeks...after he learns to ride what he has now (he forgot how to "let the clutch-lever GO" with multi-stage-lock-up...LOL...)...
Our Dyno reads the normal 172-176Hp on piped-filtered-mapped 12s...so these aren't stoo-ped high #s
Engine Details...

To be totaly safe with 100+ you should go with NO2 pistons but we have sprayed 110 with NO problems on "off-the-shelf JE pistons"...

My 1270 makes 190 h.p. and 111 ft. lbs. on the MJP dyno .
This is down from the 202 h.p. it made a couple years ago when the engine had a different configuration. At the time the cams were at 105.5in. / 100ex. with about 230psi a hole COLD.
This newer config. has a little less valve overlap and the Psi per hole is up to 245 a hole.
The beauty of this config. is the TORQUE!! How's 97 ft. lbs. by 3,800 rpm?! 100 ft. lbs. by 4,600 rpm. Not to forget, the peak power happens 1,000 rpm sooner!
BTW, runs on 91 pump

Psycho,
What are your current cam specifications? Are you using stock cams?
Thanks,
