They are not reprogramming the ECU's. They are overclocking them.

The ECU is essentially a computer and all computer CPUs are clocked. Now the ECU software's job is to measure all the engine parameters and then deliver the right amount of fuel. The injectors are not variable flow devices, they are either on or off. The ECU changes the length of time they are on to vary the fuel delivery. Like wise the RPM is rotations per unit time or the amount of time for one rotation.

Now if you change the CPU clock crystal to 105% of the normal value then the ECU is faked into thinking seconds are 105% longer than they really are. Its not that it allows more rotations per minutes its that the ECUs minutes are longer than real minutes. However because you now get more clock pulses per second that means the pulses are shorter. Because of this the injectors which stay open for X number of clock cycles stay open for 5% less time because the cycles are 5% shorter. This makes for a leaner flow.

Because the boxes are sealed in epoxy they X-ray them. Figure out where the crystals are and then probably use some kind of precision milling machine to drill into them over the crystal and replace them with new crystals.

The reason they are limited to 5% is that the CPUs are designed to run a certain clock speed and probably run erraticaly if you try to clock them above that speed. Also your CPU will run hotter at higher clock speeds.

Excellent reading. Okay, thanks this is what I was looking for. I understand WHAT is being changed now.

I see that the ECU is probably "programmable", but no one has stepped up to that level that "I KNOW OF". But from your description, it seems that each ECU moddifying system would have to be specifically engineered. Either way that would also give a window for a pass through monitor for a system data logger plugged in like a PC3. That would be REAL NICE.

Remember the six week delay back in 99-00. I guess Kawasaki was pluging into the box to change the parameters. I remember those days as being a lot of fun and frustration. These boards were humming for and with information about how to make them go faster. I still wish someone out there would release the "goods" on the 12r.

So if "SOMEONE" is reading this, join under a new name, and tells us the goods. :-) lol

Won't the "soon to be released" Dynojet ignition modul allow the rpm to be changed?

I doubt few people have the 'goods'. How to program the ECU only needs to be known at the factory level. Also there is no money in someone hacking the ECU because of the intellectual property concerns.

If anyone takes it on they would have to do it simply for the glory . I personally have the technical expertise to reverse engineer the ECU. I make my living designing single chip microcontroller industrial controls and writing embedded software. And while I would be willing to donate my time and expertise to such a project I am not financially capable of obtaining a couple of ECUs just to tear them apart .

If someone wants to send me an ECU, it doesn't need to be working, I would be happy to start the project. Understand that I will destroy the ECU in the process. If this first phase is successful, and there is no guarantee it would, then I would need a second functional ECU for testing purposes. While I would not need to take the second one apart there is always the possibility that I would screw up its programming and be unable to reprogram it which would render it useless.

So if any of you have totalled a couple of 12s recently and haven't sold the ECU's on ebay yet cause your too busy polishing your Learjet to be bothered maybe you would like to become a patron of the speed arts.

Of course it is understood that any and all information I learn about reprogramming the ECU will be released to the public domain.

hmmmm conspiracy theory...conspiracy theory.

It wasnt "stacks" or "ecus" Kawi was toying with.... Something far more evasive. Nothing was "changed" to slow the bike down. Dream all you want.
