There is no doubt: K and N's for the 12R are horrible. the stock filters seem to let stuff past them and into the airbox.....so you're only left with the BMC's....which are awesome. They have 2 options....street and race. I chose the race filters for $10 more than the street and way more flow (although there is a greater chance of something getting through).

I agree, but I have never had dirt in the Airbox with the BMC Race, but I have had dirt with stock. So if the "Stock" are good enough and the BMC Race let less dirt in, then the BMC Race are better than you need (From Kawasaki's view point) then get the BMC Race.

I still use the OEM air filters in my 2002 12, no Power Commander and still went 152mph in the 1/4 mile with MR9 fuel...

I am told that ZX12s dont need a Power Commander for a stock motor!!!

If you really feel that you need one or already have one then use the BMC filters!!!

Actually I think the main difference in filters is when they start to get dirty. First, the K&N and BMC all must be used for a while to just suck the extra Oil out of them or you will "LOSE" Hp. When Dirty, The foam filters actually work better than the Cotton element. There is a lot to consider.

For me, the big difference was the fact that I had to almost destroy the K and N's the first time I tried to remove them....despite the fact that I lubed the hell out of them on installation. The BMC's slide in and out without issue. Also with the K and N's you have to ensure that the filters are properly seated and not bowed in somewhere. I actually had to get my girlfriend to reach in through the ram air ducting (she has very little hands and arms) and push the edges of the filters into the slots in the frame. If I didn't realize they had caved in as they did, that would have been a straight shot for the dirty air into my engine.

Those reasons are why I think the K and N are so bad....for this application.

Mine were like yours until I saw a post and then pushed mine down. I used their lube and teflon oil and they were still Hell to get in and out

The difference between BMC Race and street (I was told when I called them almost 2 years ago was the amount of filtering media. They "BMC" does not reccomend using the race in the street but when I did they showed less dirt than the Stock

So the BMC race filter has less filter media than the BMC street filter?

I don't think that is "dirt". Has there ever been a definitive answer on this?

The "dirt " I found in my airbox with the stock filters was definitely dirt. It was sand (not casting or sandblasting sand, but regular brown sand) and bugs and dust and small pieces of leaves. Since the BMC's....nothing!

Ya just remove the stacks covers and stick ya hands in there and wipe it up making sure nothing falls into the stack.. i belive it was Mr. Hill who said once ya clean it lightly coat it with oil so if somethng passes your filters the oil will grab it... or something like that

I used a vacuum, and then very thoroughly wiped the area to get the last of it. Oiling (or even using grease) is a great way to stop the last of the grit from getting into the mill, but I haven't found it neccesary.....there has been nothing in the airbox since the switch.

I think the K and N's were about $70 and the BMC's cost me $109

A couple of years ago i bought kn's for my piped 12. In back to back testing 3 pulls stock filters, 3 pulls kn, pull out the kns and put the stock ones back in. I lost 3hp with the kn's on the dyno. I even tried to have the mapped tweeked to see if i could get some hp back. (nope) The kn's were brans new and of course soaked with oil as they came from the package.(168-169 hp then). Now with the 1290 kit and stock filters versus bmc race (fresh oil out of the box) I saw about a 1 hp gain without remapping. Now it might be from the possible (air)need of the bigger motor or dyno variances. I'm not sure but nevertheless alot easier to take out and clean. I also appears nothing is getting thru(.leaves, sand etc)
