Well, if you're determined...... I used to ice race in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
(Flat rack on frozen lakes.) We took self tapping hex head sheet metal screws (the kind with the hex and a slot) about 3/8 long and screwed the INTO the konbs on a knobby two or three to a knob. Traction was better than dirt and wheelies on ice were no problem. Granted, snomobiles were slower then but we had no trouble smokin' their ass. Really pissed 'em off.
What about something like a Metzeler Sahara or some such with studs on the sides just off the vertical tire patch..........
I ride my KLR here in the winter once in a while and it's OK for about 10 minutes until I'm tired of picking it up.......

doug, screws & spikes are no good on pavement, and i'll liekyl do mroe clear pavement than true snow/ice.
i have read the suggestion of keeping the studs off the center line actually, tho i wonder what that woudl do to your ability to stop (and start too i guess).
the sahara's look ok, but i suspect the angled tread pattern won't grip as well as i'd like in snow. also, there's that issue about needing a tire marked M&S. so far the TKC80s are the only tires i'v seen with that designation.
