chevy truck question
What can i do to make a 95 2500 pull off quicker.
I'm not trying to make a dragster out of it but this thing
acts like it's pulling a load even empty. it's a 350 auto with overdrive. Hwy use is great just getting off at the lights is driving me crazy.
My brother has a 92 1500 with the same engine that moves pretty quick. Are they geared that different?
Will a chip or programmer help? IF so which one?
I don't want to be forced to use 93 octane.

Unless you are going to advance the hell out of your timing, 93 won't help you.
What is your rear end ratio, change it to something lower (higher number)....

check other obvious things too, spark plugs, catalytic converter, fuel delivery system, air filter etc
anything that would rob power needs checked.
i hate automatic gearboxes. so i don't own any ;P
used to have a car with one, and the tranny robbed so much power itself the car couldn't get out of its own way....
perhaps it may just be that huge power-robbing POS automatic gearbox ;P

I had a ford, nissan and 2 dodges , now this chevy(by far the slowest).
Runs smooth, no miss, starts quick, rides good. I even counted the gears to make sure it started in low.

Chevy's are usually pretty peppy. What are you comparing it to? Yer 12? well, duh! ;D
I'd do a once-over on the engine and make sure it's up to 100%, first. Good plugs, wires, airfilter, etc. etc. etc.

I'm camparing it to a 250K mile dodge, a 88 nissan 4 banger w 200k, and a 92 1500 with 300k. It's a used truck with 130K.
Previous owner said it had a timing chain at 100k but who knows. .
I will probably do a leak-down and if that's good i'll put a chain in it myself.
I never really got into performance mods for cars mainly because i drive the Sheeeeet out of them. Just thought some of you guys might know something.

Yup - sounds like something basic. Go over basic stuff with the engine. Heck, maybe you have a plug wire that's loose - or any number of things.
Carburated? When was the last time the carb was cleaned and had the once over?
Fresh plugs? How are the wires? Points? Vacuum lines okay?

The timing chain thingy got my attention. Who installed it? Could they have gotten it a tooth off? Aside from what everybody els said about the basic stuff.

Don't know who installed the chain, but that's what bothers me.
I have seen older cars respond very well to a new chain.
TBI, i'll run another can of Chevron thru it.
Fresh plug, old wires, no points, vacuum seem good (smooth idle).
Could it be worn cam and it still run smooth?
Sometimes it knocks 2-3 seconds when i first crank it.
Like a lifter bleeding down. Is this common to the newer chevys
because i know of another one that has done this for over 3 years.
This thing does have a very low red line 4500 if i remember right, less than 2000 rpm at 55 mph with overdrive.

...I just replaced the opti-spark distributor, coil, crank-sensor, two cats, four oxygen sensors in my '96 132K-mile Caprice with LT1 engine (already had the MSD plug wires and Digital Plus-6 and headers/full dual exhaust and KN FIPK in the car)...I'm hoping that I'll get back my mid-20s mpgs cruising at 65+mph when it was 60K miles ...the 3.73 (from stock 3.08) rear-end swap did wonders for the acceleration...and the street/track tranny build-up w/slightly higher stall makes it mondo fun ...still a very dependable and streetable honkin' big car ride...its a keeper

I would lean towards an old-assed converter getting clogged up, or, just a tired engine and lazy gearing.
would be interesting to see how it ran with the catalytic convertor unbolted.
On an engine with those miles, I'd have to wonder about the plugs next.
I've not heard about the knock problem when starting,....sounds odd to me.

but i HAVE been driving it for 5 years 115k miles too
but my first driveline replacement will be tomorow, transfer case finally went TU
*sigh*
great junkyard outside memphis, got me a low-miles one for 200 bux.
can't beat that with a stick

Put a vacuum gauge on it before you get your hands dirty , does it fluctuate or hold steady ?
An easy way to check your timing chain ;
take off the distributor cap
put a mark on the balancer near the timing pointer
rotate the engine with a breaker bar on the crank snout back and forth while watching the rotor
see how many degrees the crank turns before the rotor does
less than five leave it , more than ten , it's tired
If the chain was installed a tooth off then the vaccuum reading will be quite low
good luck

P.S.if the vaccuum gauge fluctuates then it may be the converter or muffler clogged
