If it weren't for bad luck...............

If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

Today on my lunch break I had an accident which left one person injured and 2 vehicles totalled.

I am thankful that I was wearing my seatbelt (always do) because it did its' job and kept me strapped in my seat. I still feel like I've been ran over by a train because it was a huge impact. My left leg did smack the underside of the dash pretty damned hard, but I think it'll be ok in a few days.

The other guy is probably gonna be in major pain for a few days. I hit him from behind @ approximately 50 mph and he was sitting dead still in the highway waiting to turn left. It had just started pouring down rain and I was fumbling with my wipers and look up to see him about 10' in front of me stopped. I knew it was gonna be brutal and it was. What an impact, I felt it in my friggin' teeth it was so hard. I was also shocked at how LOUD it was. He was in a 4wd Chevy and his rear bumper was up high enough that I more or less drove under him. For a split second I actually thought his truck was gonna come thru my windsheild, and it almost did. It just kinda punted his truck forward at the last second and then all I could do was ride it out. No steering and no brakes. I came to rest on a side road and unbuckled my belt to try and get to the other guy and check his condition. I couldn't open the driver's door due to the fender being shoved back into it, so I exited the vehicle on the passenger's side and went back out across the highway and checked on the guy. His head busted out the back window upon impact, then on decel (i guess) he smacked the steering wheel and busted his forehead open pretty damned bad. He was alert but had tons of blood gushing out. I talked to him and appologized for fucking up his day, his truck, and his head. He was very damned nice considering. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. They wanted to take me but I said I'd be ok and that they needed to get him taken care of asap.

The wrecker came and towed my truck to the body shop I use and they gave me the news almost instantly. Total loss, no need to dig any deeper. Engine is pushed back into the firewall, cab is pushed back pretty good on the drivers side, and just a host of other shit all fucked up.

I call my insurance agent when I get back to work to arrange for a rental only to find out some genius deleted the rental car option off my policy. I was fucking fuming mad and still don't know what to make of that. My agent has always been a good man to deal with, so I don't really know who to be pissed at.

To add insult to injury I just dropped $1000 on new Michelins and some frontend work LAST FRIDAY!!! The damned tires have less than 200 miles on them. I loved that truck, bought it new in '99 and have never had a minutes trouble. Everyone thought I was nuts buying a Dodge instead of a Ford or Chevy, but I never regretted it except for the gas milage. It had 72k miles and nary door ding, scratch, or flaw in the interior. It honestly looked as good as it did the day it was new, a fact that the guys at the body shop pointed out. I just hate to see something like that happen to a solid vehicle that was taken out way before its' time. I am a stickler about taking care of my things, and now I'll be payed what the average truck like mine is worth.

I'm just bummed and I know the important thing is that I walked away, and that the other guy will be ok in a few days. (hopefully) Right now I am feeling pretty sore, and kinda out of it. I guess the adrenaline has long wore off and I can tell I'm gonna be sore as shit. But I still faired WAY better than the guy I hit. He was totally innocent and I fuckin' ran all over him.

What a fuckin' day.

Glad to hear your okay. Sorry about your truck and like TB said, contact a lawyer.

Even if he was in the wrong lane or left turns are not allowed at that location, rear ending someone can alway be Harry.... I mean, hairy. Legally speaking, of course.

If a left turn can be made from that location, you might feel like Harry AND TB paid you a visit (with Bart and Otis watching). Call your lawyer.

Injurys other than those shown my screw with the man you hit for his entire life. His quailty of life may sprial down hill from this point forward.

I have two hernated discs from being rear ended sitting at a red light and the driver was doing 60 mph and never touched his brakes.

Screw the truck, They make new trucks every day of the week. And the guy you hit may be the the truly unlucky one.

At least your at home typing Rick, Where is the poor smuck you ran over? I know of a guy at work that had two operations on his discs in his neck this year. Out of the last 12 months he has missed 8 months of work. If someone did not have a good job and this happened, They could lose everything they worked for in there entire life.

If I were you, I would take the time and go visit the poor unlucky smuck you ran over. Screw the truck man

Norm,
As soon as I get the guys phone number I'm caling him. I know all too well how I messed up the guys' well being. I just got home from the ER myself, and it's friggin' approaching 3 am as I type this.

On a lighter note the muscle relaxer and pain shot are taking effect quite nicely.

Wrong comment at the wrong time - Obviously not made in "good humor" to one's best friend to cheer him up. Keep that shit in the Smack forum.

I believe it gives newcomers the exact "impression" they should have and if they posted something similar on this thread or "... with a heavy heart" thread (or like topics), they can expect the same action. Since we provide not one, but two forums for such commentary, it will not be put up with on this one.

Who your sympathy lies with is moot to me. How you express it is not. Creativity requires a tad bit of "taste" to be truly funny. Your comment was neither. If anything, I felt that we would not wish to give newbies the impression that you are a tasteless moron, since both you and I know that you are neither, right?

Damn, Rick. That sucks, man.

Glad you and others involved are relatively okay. Wish things turn out for the best, naturally.

This one may leave a mark.
