Racing Leathers Questions

O.K. Help folks, Our little team of Squids are looking a 4 sets of one piece leathers. Anybody know where we can get a racer or Quantity discount looking for race grade, not the cheap crap. Looking for Syed, Kobe, Spidi,AGV,Kushitani, any ideas guys, looking for the infinite wisdom of this group.
One of my teammates mother offered to a new set of leathers for all riders for the team !!! SO let us know of your thoughts on the best deals ou there !!Also a report from racers on quality, ie, speed humps, thickness of the leathers , protection and fit.
Sincerely,
Chris Roberts CMRA # 614

Get at least 1.2 mil. Cheap ones are that and better leathers are thicker. Thicker = better IMHO.

SYED seems to offer the best bang for the buck in my book, and also offer customization at a very reasonable rate. You can get custom fit leathers for less than $1k from them and they will be top notch as well.

I tore the hell out of some cheap Teknic leathers with just one crash, while a 120 mph get off in the Syeds only had minor sratches on 'em. With a SMALL tear in the shoulder.

They work well IMHO.

Vansons are really cool as well, but are more 'street' oriented and also substantially more than Syed.

Serious leather has real weight. Mine are heavy but about twice as thick as Randalls! Barnacle Bills Racing leathers, about 1,000 and all custom made

"One question to ask "BEFORE" you buy anyone's Leathers!!

Do you REPAIR and Clean your leathers?????

I know that Bates does and that Barnacle Bill does, but who else? Barnacle Bill repaired and altered my Perone Leathers and Bates who I have bought several sets and boots from refused. This is seriously something to consider.

One other thing to consider is have the company send you a sample of Black and white leather that they will use to make your suit out of. Compare that to the same 2 pieces from Barnacle Bills. If it is close, then go ahead, but if the difference is tissue Paper to card Board reconsider!

Side Note, It was not until Patty Perone was so upset with Bated for not putting any padding in the Road Race Suits that she made her own and sold them that Bates even "Considered" putting padding in Road Race Suits. I had to order a DIrt Track from Bated to get "Padding"! Nothing against Bates but they are so union that the Lady that ownes the place had me send my suit to her and and she could not "Make" them work on it! Also watch out for the Vent Holes for many reasons. Some organizations (like SCTA) do not allow them and then some Holey suits will tear. Barnacle Bills are sometimes Doubled in the leather if it is not seriously thick and there is a lot of Holes. He also will not put a hole any closer together than 1 square inch!

Many racers use Syeds in my club. They don't have to cajole for padding. And the padding is also underneat additional padding in the elbows and knees. Plus there is a bit more padding between the plastic guards and your elbows to keep the heat transfer down when sliding (I've been burned like that before).

And the answer Syed will tell you, Vinnie, is "Yes". They'd have to since most suits are custom made by them anyway.

I saw those leathers at the Dallas Motorcycle show this weekend. Seemed to me the stitching and seams were kinda weak.

Just MHO.

As long as the information is known, then there is nothing to have a problem about. Not because of my size (ABout 190 at the time) but I looked like the Michellin mad compared to everyone in Bates leathers back (of course) in the day! Now I have almost too much padding. I am sending Randall's POS Technique (How ever you spell it) suit to Bill to have some padding put in and then cut down to get ti fairly tight on him "After the extra padding!"

Jon,
Your are 100% correct. They look nice, but the stiching does look a little sad. Not sure what we are going to purchase. the SYED are the best deal, just have to convice the rest of the team of that. I may just buy them for myself. How was the dallas show, and the awards? Keep me in touch with the track days you guys plan on attending. I would like some Jon, 1 on 1 schooling when the time is right. I need the seat time @ pace. I will try to keep up !!
