Thats not a stupid question...
I use 16-44, it gives you a 1/2 inch more wheelbase with the OEM chain!!!...At the finish your in 4th at RedLine...

4 gears, like Rick said, 16-44 is the best gearing for a stock wheelbase stock 12r, it maximizes potential wheelbase of the stock arm and chain, and is a good numerical gearing ratio for drag racing as long as you weigh less than 230 lbs. Otherwise you may want to consider more gear.

I appreciate the answers but I meant (with stock gearing, how many shifts are needed for optimum quarter mile times, assuming a good launch and all)?? Last time I was short shifting and used all six because I didn't want to take bike over 8-9K rpm.. so, assuming bike is broken in, how many gear shifts are normally required for best ET....

Stock gearing taking each gear to redline will put you top of 3rd...
Comeon Bill you have to wind it out, shift just before redline then let it run out to the finish in 3rd...
To save yourself $$$ on clutches go with the 16-44 sprockets and let the bike pull you out of the launch...

Thank you.. I intend to keep my 12R until I die and it will be stock (except for the frame sliders/spools) etc... I want to enjoy it as it is and am well satisfied with performance.. Am having my last hurrah at dragstrip and would like best times while I still feel strong enough to act foolish.. Short of a lung transplant, these are the best of times.. Don't feel sorry for me because I'm smiling and thanking the powers that be for my good fortune in life.. I'm a person that doesn't take my 12R for granted as it is my most prized possession ever (material thing).. Going to test and tune at Tulsa today and Thunder Valley tomorrow.. This 56 year old fart is riding!

I was really under the weather at Tulsa and only made one run.. Pure traction on that track and did giant wheelie and really bogged it down...
11.7 and 127.. I was with a group of 6 ZRX's and we had a blast running around Tulsa, getting bikes dyno'd, drag racing and hanging out watching hot rods at Sonic Drive-in.. A lotta people were showing appreciation for the hooligans on their ZRX's... I'm paying now.. Had fever and chills and even my hair hurts.. Worst head cold I've ever had.. Think I'm feeling just a tad better this morn... Later
