What a b*tch

Bought my 00 12 first week january this year.
Only 430 miles on it right now....tryin to break it in correctly after compiling break in procedures from all sources.

I chose to follow the manual on the RPM limits per mileage.
0-500 miles 4k
500-1000 6k
1000-2000 9k

I also chose to run for 15 minutes and then cool completely before running again.
I have a nice windy road that goes uphill and downhill right by my house that is 3 miles long for up and down the rpm range.

My question is this: Am I being anal breaking it in?

Man, it's taking me a long time.

I think there's a post where some experts like Doug Meyer talk about breakin, etc. I don't think it's really necessary to strictly follow the breakin schedule, but that's a personal opinion.

I would think the first 500 miles might be the most important. I just rode the bike everywhere and made sure I had the proper amount of oil. Changed the oil and filter 3x before 2000 miles. After that every 1600-2000 miles. The bike doesnt really breakin until after 4000 miles (on the street) anyway. I wouldnt be afraid to rev it after your 1st 500 miles though.

ddpete3...we're doing Palomar, Julian, Ortega, Ocotillo next week...should get you the mileage you need for your next oil/filter change...stopping every 15~20 minutes for heat cycling is no big deal to me...just load up your tank bag with food and drinks...give us something to do for an hour as we wait...no stress...no schedule...ride, eat, drink, ride, eat, drink, etc............

Anal???

Anal??...Maybe a little. But your not hurting things by being safe either.

The breakin is not necessarily directly RPM related, but an issue of breakin at the piston ring to cylinder wall interface (and some other less important areas).

Everyone here will agree that a new ZX12 will run hot during breakin. There is a reason for that. Most of the heat in an engine is created in the cylinder from combustion and from piston ring to cyinder wall friction.

When piston rings and cylinder walls are new, they are not perfectly mated together (although todays manufacturing techniques are far superior to a few years ago). Because of this there are high spots between the two that need to be worn down slowly for a perfect seal to take place. These limited areas of contact are going to be high friction areas because of the smaller surface area compared to a fully broken in ring. These high spots will wear down naturally over a period of time but the trick is to wear them down slowly as the limited contact will create hot spots on the face of the ring.

So what I'm saying is don't use heavy amounts of throttle for long periods of time. This could result in those spots of contact actually over heating and welding themselves to the cylinder wall in small bits which would result in blowby, compression loss and power loss.

I would recommend you let the engine rev freely at this point, but only for short periods like when you're going through the gears. Use only half throttle when doing this (you'll still go fast) and let 'er cool off between "runs" . I personally didn't hit redline till 2000 KM (about 1200 miles).

Good luck! Have fun! -ZXtra

Ya know, in a discussion related to breakin miles that I had with a friend today, has anyone considered that maybe the longer breakin period is due to the Nikasil coating, hence a lower rate of wear on the rings, requiring a longer breakin to seat them properly?

Just a little FYI.......ZX12 cylinder is not nikasil(that is a patented process by another OEM) it is a type of electrofusion.

Break in is to relieve sharp edges on piston skirt & crown due to uneven expansion & contraction of dissimilar metals, high & low spots on mechanical surfaces, loosen tight clearances, seating of valves, mating of gears....so on & so forth.
This is true of all new machines.

Breaking in by OEM directions insures longevity.

I was just about to say the same thing extreamlean said! But once again he beat me to it. Damn! I just rode mine, did't bang on it or anything. After 1K I started to ride using more of the throtle. Then I got the revised owners manual. But I have no engine problems at all

Follow the break-in the way the manufacture recommends, they know BETTER then anyone! Why fuck around with a motor that you're going to rev the shit out of, after the break-in.

I was asking about how large the logos were for the summit superseries they are having this season! and you know I dont think it would be right giving a larger space to IHRA and Summit, then Interstate. man that would make them happy! The lady then tells me well Interstate shure Isnt giving me 150,000 if I win agenst every other sportsman racer in the IHRA, hmmm.. OK I guess I will just have to go out there and show her!!
