Lets talk about ZX12r transmissions...

Unfortunately we had a green 2000 12 puke its (#3 or 4) gear inside the motor for reasons unknown. The bike was not being raced, although it has about 150+ passes down the 1/4. Being curious, we pulled the motor from the bike and found the cog(s) in at least 5 different recongnizable pieces and a bunch more schrapnel. The cases have to be split on an otherwise strong low mileage motor to get to the trans. So my questions are:

-Anyway (or tips) to extract the trans from the motor without splitting the cases?

-Should we spring for the R&D workup and buy a used trans for parts? ($1500 +)

-Should we sell the broken trans motor as is... and buy a used one?

-Any other ideas or tips??? (no flames here...hehe)

Weighing options as far as rebuild.

Yes you have to split the cases! but you dont need to take any of the top end off! so other then dropping the motor it really is not that big of a deal.

for a streetbike No need for an R&D,

No just rebuild it, or I will give you 500 bucks for it!

also, I have some one who is interestded in having a broken tranny for Mock ups. so I can buy that one from you for a hundy if you are interested.

I had 3rd gear blow.

Replaced 3nd and 3rd gear w/ billet gears made by Billy Robinson.

I would not suggest having ZX12 gears undercut. This will weaken already
weak gears. 2nd., 3rd. and 4th. gears are offset and get side loaded.

psycho.. I read that in a search I did. Yours was the one that broke after a long straightaway??

PM me or contact me offline and give me an idea of the cost of the replacement/service for this.

OEM parts are around $750 new.

Oh yeah.. tips on reassembly?

Is it ok to soak the whole motor minus the valve cover in a parts washer?

John's broke THAT gear also...
I am using the BILLET gears that R&D now carries...
I would NOT put the entire motor in any solvent...SEALS won't like that...
Do it by/with the book...
You also need to have the input and output shafts checked to see if they are straight...
I personaly would have R&D check everything...They have done VERY good work on everything we have sent them...As opposed to...someone else we sent a GXR-tranny to because they WERE going to be faster (R&D is ALWAYS busy)...sent it back undercut with an OBVIOUSLY bad gear...
If R&D finds anything wrong...they will call and tell you...
NewStockParts should last as long as the first ones did...LOL...

Thanks fer answering Warbird's question...
I don't think they have a WebSite...

I can also tell you that they do most (if not all) of Velocity's tran-work...
Never had a problem with them...
